A magnificent and riveting epic first-rate thriller. A masterpiece. Director, Christopher Nolan delivers a superb film. It's pure magic. A classic. Dazzeling filmmaking. Astonishing, brilliant, stylish, compelling and nail-biting. Thrilling and exhilerating. It's extroadinary, stunning, spellbinding, outstanding, eye-popping and mind-blowing. It will have you gripping your seat through every awsome twist and breathtaking turn right to the very shocking finish. You wont know what hits you next. Breathtaking excitment and suspense that will keep you guessing right till the very end. Truly incrediable and absolutely unforgettable. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale give sensational performances. Bale is great and compelling. Jackman is powerful and engaging. Michael Caine gives a marvelous performance. Teriffic entertainment that will keep you on the edge of your seat. An excellent and truly amazing movie. Intelligent, ingenious, memerising and original. A body of work of an expert craftsman.
Very good movie. I haven't seen a movie this intriguing in quite a while. Even though I figured it out pretty early, it still kept me absorbed. The acting was great, the look was perfect, and Christopher Nolan has made yet another movie that has impressed me. It handles the extent of obsession and what it does to a man very well, and also shows how dedication to an art is all-encompassing and life-absorbing, making it very easy for obsession to come about. The details are what sealed the deal for me, with magic tricks being shown and how they work throughout the film. Most definitely worth seeing.
Disappointing! I read and heard many review for this, i think its some kinda unique, mind you. but what else is there? i dont get the suspense, or tension there, and more else with the ending scene gives me a bang in the head and say 'Why the hell i spend my times watching this movie??' i confess, i watched it years ago, i can re-watch it again but with negative memory, lets see.. *sigh*
A great entertaining film that any movie lover will enjoy. A very long story that never gets boring. Ever scene is intense with either fighting or screaming. A masterpeice all should enjoy.
OK, it's a good movie. I kind of liked it. Way better than "The Illusionist" and It's always pleasant to see Christian Bale. So, having said that I feel free to criticize it: Why?????????? Why so many explanations??? Do they think we are stupid??? Everything was pretty obvious. Non of that final scenes were really necessary. Specially the very very last one. I don't understand what kind of concept do these people have about their audience. It would have been so much better if it had ended at least 15 minutes earlier.
A sleight-of-hand thriller set in Britain's Victorian era where magic was mysterious and performing it precarious, the film is a dark and aggressive emotional roller coaster that challenges the imagination.
Part homage to the art of performance, part admiration of science and technology, part unexpected turn to science fiction, and total mind-melting madness.
This dazzling film and first-rate thriller holds you spellbound and doesn't let go
Who knew the lives of two rival magicians could be one of the greatest movies of all time? Epic plot with an even greater twist that I shall not mention - this is a must see for any movie goer, if you haven't seen it, you have failed as a movie buff.
A small film that feels much bigger. This odd but highly enjoyable period thriller was a surprise gem, in typical Chrisopher Nolan style. A great cast give excellent performances in one of my favourite movies of 2006
one of the best movies i've ever seen. THE twist movie. i'll admit the essence of the movie isn't in the twist (because it's not all that impressive), but in the characters' performances. it has significance because of the how the characters acted. excellent screenwriting
"Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts.
The first part is called "The Pledge".
The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course... it probably isn't.
The second act is called "The Turn".
The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back.
That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part,
The part we call "The Prestige"."
by Cutter (Micheal Caine)
Well,It's Nolan. The man is born as a director. What can I say that hasn't been said about him.
1st Memento then Insomnia later Batman Begins (My Number 1 Comic Book Movie Of All-Time).Now this.
The man is a Pure Genius.
Brilliant storyline,
Masterfully Directed
Shocking Twist
Outstanding Screenplay and Cinematography.
One thing I like to say is Don't Compare This To "The Illusionist".These are two different movies. And they both good.
Nolan brings many intriguing visual _disabled with drama as well.
For actors...Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Sir Michael Caine all contributed stunning, emotional performances. Rebecca Hall, who played Sarah to Bale's Alfred Borden, turned in a highly charged performance as well, making Scarlett Johansson's Olivia flat in comparison. The film also has a solid performance of David Bowie, playing as a Tesla "the expert in electricity".
A good suspense film is very much like a magician's trick: we have absolutely no idea where this remarkable lead-up is taking us, and the final revelation is so mind-blowing that, after the curtains come down, we find ourselves stumbling from the theatre in a delightful daze of exhilaration and satisfaction. Already, we are arguing with the person who was sitting beside us: how was it all accomplished? One by one, most of the pieces slowly fall into place, but the film/magician still retain a sense of mystery, of wonder, of magic. Christopher Nolan's 'The Prestige' is precisely this sort of film. In the grand scheme of things, it is something of a nonentity, destined to become neither significant nor influential; however, it is such a invigorating thrill-ride that you get the sense that it is the promise of films like this that is the very reason we go to the cinema
The following will reveal the story.
In the end of the Nineteenth Century, in London, Robert Angier, his beloved wife Julia McCullough and Alfred Borden are friends and assistants of a magician. When Julia accidentally dies during a performance, Robert blames Alfred for her death and they become enemies. Both become famous and rival magicians, sabotaging the performance of the other on the stage. When Alfred performs a successful trick, Robert becomes obsessed trying to disclose the secret of his competitor with tragic consequences.
Not at all what I was expecting it to be. You can't take your eyes off the screen or you'll miss something. Will keep you wondering what actually happened even as the credits roll!!
One of the greatest films I have ever seen. There is so much depth to it, and despite people hating on the ending, I find it absolutely fitting: in a film entirely devoted to the ideals of sleight of hand and trickery in the guise of genuine magic, the audience finally gets to see some real magic--and is unpleasantly disturbed by it (exactly as Angier said in the finale!)
Engaging film with a great look, spectacular photography and art direction, a solid cast which includes my favorite actor, Christian Bale (terrific, as always), Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, Andy Serkis and David Bowie; a magnificent story and great script, along with exciting twists. Christopher Nolan did a wonderful job with this.
I just finished re-watching The Prestige, and certainly gathered and discovered more the second time than the first (well, who wouldn't?) Chris Nolan has a talent for bewildering people, or at least confusing them so tremendously, and that's exactly what he did here. Every time I re-watch Nolan's films I get so more fond of them, since they just get more rousing to me. This is an exceedingly suspenseful and intriguing film, with fascinating characters and amazing performances by none other than Jackman and Bale. Brilliant acting by both of them, nothing less. Caine doesn't exactly come short either, and Bowie gave such a mystic and electrifying performance as well. The movie only fails when it comes to the relationships between the men and Olivia (played by Scarlett Johansson). While her affection to them is supposed to mean love, this falls short into the audience's eyes as when you really can't feel their emotions toward eachother. All of it just feels too hasty and not real. Still, with that said; this movie is, even with its minor flaws, yet another brilliant film by the oh so talented director Christopher Nolan.
The Prestige has a plot so full of twists and turns it merits several viewings - and even then there will be arguments over who did what - but I can honestly say that it is so engrossing that I enjoyed every minute of it again and again. What I really admire is the way everything - every word spoken, every action - was linked throughout the story. Nothing is wasted.
i get this movie and the illusionist mixed up coz they came out at the same time and i watched them in the same day haha. but i think i liked both of them. i liked one more then the other. i think i liked this one more.. yreah yeah this is the one i liked more, it was clever, the whole twin thing.
