    Meh...

This version of the classic novel is a little long on sappy love and short on action, and Stewart Granger is his usual smarmy, wooden self. On the plus side, the screen lights up when James Mason's wonderfully machiavelian villain appears, and there's a very lively climactic duel.

Mason is so sublimely, delectably evil here, I defy you to take yer eyes off him.

Why do all these movies from the 40s and 50s have a picture of a guy kissing a girl who's head is tilted back? What's she got? A nosebleed?

One of my favorites. I love Stewart Granger in this. And James Mason - he was so sexy. But if you stand next to Stewart no one will notice you.

I studied this story as the educations's literature component in English, and I hope a new version of this movie is made.
