This was a cute movie and I wish I had this mother's optimism. I would have kicked the alcoholic father out as soon as I found out we were going to lose our house b/c he took out a second mortgage without telling me. Her way of sustaining her family amused me b/c I have won a few...( read more) contests in my life as well!

I guess this movie was OK. Not to fault the actors or anything; they were fine. Good to Evelyn for holding her family together. It is just that I will have forgotten I'd ever seen this movie in two weeks time.

Woody Harrelson is awesome in this movie as a drunken crappy father. "I'm a chump in a slump, and I live in a dump. SANDWICH." Other wise, the rest of the movie was some inspirational overcoming adverstiy story that I failed to pay attention to.

Moore plays a woman with 10 children. Although her husband works as a machinist, she basically provides for the family by winning all sorts of contests for all kinds of big prizes, including big cash prizes. The woman is a master of winning these things. It's the one thing that's...( read more) keeping her family together. She's definitely the hero and the one person everyone looks up to. Definitely an inspiration. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll stop at that, but I will say that Moore does a great job with her role. Moore's husband in the movie, played by Woody Harrelson with emotional conviction and healthy dose of humanity, has a drinking problem and is a big source of tension inside the household. The film is beautifully layered with symbols of motherhood and Catholicism, none of which are so obvious as to interfere with the lighthearted moments that make the film captivating. Anderson deftly transitions from the high points of the family's success to the terrible depths of their despair, capturing the audience as they share in the Ryan's joys and sorrows. Anderson's hard work in showing the families dynamic is most evident however in the cohesiveness of the Ryan children, all of whom look like a potential genetic pairing between Moore and Harrelson, and all of whom seemed enthusiastic about their work in the film. when asked what he learned from his more experienced co-stars, Robert Clarke, who plays the Ryan's oldest son Dick, mentioned Harrelson's multitude of approaches to a scene and Moore's constant professionalism. Ellory Potterfield (Tuff) commented that for her. The Prize Winner takes you back to that time in American history when the thought of winning and capturing "The American Dream" was one you could accomplish with hard work and talent. Julianne Moore makes the film all the more powerful with her portrayal of an American mother who will use her brains and determination to keep her family together. This film is one of the best to come along in 2005.

One of Julianne Moore's more subtle and charming performances saves this movie. I could have done without all the gimmicky stuff, but I thought it was a lovely little movie and reminded me of my own mother.

Enjoyable but not a great flick. Julianna Moore was too beautiful to play the part of Evelyn Ryan. It added to the superficiality of the character - played too happy (another June Cleaver???.) Perhaps this is how Ryan was presented in her daughter's memoir (I haven't read it.) I ...( read more)enjoyed Woody Harrelson's more realistic performance but felt his drinking problem resolved too obliquely. Melanie Tonello was wonderful as her feisty & willful pre/young teen daughter. I think this would make a wonderful stage play. It is set almost entirely in their home & yard and the tension/release could come off well.

This movie surprised me alot. This whole movie is based on a true story of a huge family of 12 that are living in the 50's.Its about a mother/stay at home house wife that enter's all these contests so her and her family can live. Her husbund use to be a singer now he spends there m...( read more)oney on bozze so she enters these contest's for chances to win food, drinks, cars and money to keep her family afloat.Julianne moore was amazing as Evelyn Ryan. Its got some crazy parts, funny and at the end gets depressing and quite sad. This poor simple lady has to keep 10 children strong as well as her husbund that acts like a real jerk when he's drunk. Its such a wild story that I couldnt believe it was true. But I read some info on the net and in different books after watching this, and its true.
This was a wonderful and enjoyable movie.worth checking out.
