Ultimately, there is something refreshing about The Proposal's undemanding humour and unabashed feel-good factor.

While I enjoyed this overall, there were at least a couple of moments that were very bizarre and didn't seem to fit.

Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock have really great chemistry throughout the movie, and they both have funny one-liners they throw at each other that made me laugh...( read more).

I had the biggest issue with the scene where Gammy (Betty White) is out in the woods chanting...I really thought it would end up being a dream sequence, but it wasn't. It was very weird, and had some pretty poor special effects, and I really didn't see the point to it.

Overall, a very solid romantic comedy.

Very vanilla and even knowing where, how and with whom it would end I still found myself enjoying this just enough to hold my interest.
It could have been the fact that I love Sandra Bullock as well as Ryan Reynolds (his timing is just impeccable and I really wish I had his abs!...( read more)). It could have been the beautiful vistas. It might have been the tight editing and occasional snappy dialogue, good chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds, but whatever it was...it held up just enough.
This is an old story, you have seen it a million times before. There is really nothing overly special about it, but the execution gave me just enough gas to get through it.
I keep reading how this movie was simply "by the numbers" and I cannot disagree, but I just couldn't hate it (and please bring me more of Ms. Bullock in recently showered splendor to the screen).
A solid three stars and just fine for an evening fluff affair.

Funny in some parts, but predictable in others.
  • December 16, 2009
Extremely funny. I found the main couple a bit odd together.. yet it was hilarious.

Nigel Andrews, The Financial Times

So keen to be cute it curdles our stomachs and so anxious to be funny it jellifies our funny bones. full review

Without question this riotously funny flick is the year's best comedy -- at least so far. full review

Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

A romantic comedy doesn't need to be original to be enjoyable, and yet The Proposal still falls way too short of the mark. full review

Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

It isn't a film with a lot of big guffaws, but I smiled through most of it. full review

Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail

Onscreen chemistry is an elusive notion but you know it when you see it, and Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds definitely have it in The Proposal. full review

June 18, 2009
Claudia Puig, USA Today

Though it falls short of winning our hearts completely, The Proposal is a serviceable and intermittently funny romance made enjoyable by the sparks between Bullock and Reynolds. full review

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

A romantic comedy so numbing it feels like Novocaine. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Proposal recycles a plot that was already old when Tracy and Hepburn were trying it out. You see it coming from a great distance away. As it draws closer, you don't duck out of the way, because it... full review

Every scene between Bullock and Reynolds only suggests how fine they might be in good circumstances. full review
