i just can`t imagine sharon stone as a cow girl.can you? the movie claimed to be a neo-western one but it is nothing more than a disaster which is gonna be forgotten in time and it already has a little bit.
Lots of style points for director Sam Raimi but not much of a story. However, that's ok as it's a fun spaghetti western featuring Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, a young Russell Crowe, and an even younger Leo DiCaprio.
I think this movie is remarkably underrated for its wonderful awfulness. It's also interesting to look at the stars of this movie and realize that the actors who played more secondary characters (Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio) are now bigger stars than the people who were big stars when it was made (Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman).
Russel Crow, Gene Hackman and Sharon Stone did a fantastic job in this film. The ending was unbelievable when Gene Hackman shot his own son Leonardo Dicapro! :)
I hate when movie critics defend movies they enjoy by degrading the intelligence or cinematic knowledge of those people who disagree with them. Having said that, I feel that Sam Raimi's 'The Quick and the Dead' is a vastly underrated mini-classic and if you don't think so, then you're a big dumb moron!
Raimi's movie borrows heavily from classic spaghetti westerns, but Raimi has a style of his own, and plenty of it; complete with straightforward, fast-paced action, a plethora of unusual camera angles, creaking leather and cleverly choreographed violence.
Sharon Stone is a strong lead as an Eastwood-esque interloper with no name and a score to settle, while Hackman's creepy "badguy" is full of malicious delight at his own devilish cunning.
The whole film has tremendous visual style, and the frequent bursts of violence are delivered with a clever and often hilarious use of special effects. The Quick and The Dead will always be the best "Western?" I've ever seen.
This movie is so bad, it's good. Some of the dramatic camera shots in the gun battles make me want to throw up, but most if the acting is awesome and I love it!
A well-put-together movie, however some of the stereotypes are a little too visible for everyone to see in some of the characters. Russell Crowe's "I renounce violence" character is the first one I noticed. Other than that I liked how Gene Hackman kept the role has the villain. Not a bad movie all around, but the script could have been better.
Hollywood western cliche's wrapped in Madonna style feminism, a good cast barely saves the day here. Note:Colt Single Action Army revolvers were very expensive back then, yet in these type of westerns, everybody seems to have one...If you buy Sharon Stone as a lethal Butch and dont mind some incorrect details, then grab the popcorn...
A quirky western from Sam Raimi that caught Sharon Stone on her way down, DiCaprio on his way up and Gene Hackman milking his Oscar for Unforgiven. But the real star of this film is Russell Crowe in a supporting role that shows us exactly who he will become in the decade ahead. Come for Raimi, stay for Crowe.
Very entertaining homage to original spaghetti westerns is a lot better than I originally thought it would be. First of all, the plot and script are excellently conceived. The characters are all very typical for this genre (with the exception of a female lead) and the dialogue is surprisingly decent. An unknown female gunslinger (Stone) rides into a depressing town run by the despicable Mr. Herod (Hackman). Seeking revenge for her father's death when she was a young girl, she enters a quick-draw competition for which the prize is a huge sum of money. A lot of interesting characters show up throughout the course of the competition, including an outlaw-turned-preacher who refuses to fight (Crowe), and a young arrogant man who thinks he's the fastest (DiCaprio). But only one can win the competition...and only one can survive. Raimi's stylish direction is full of marvellous close ups that resemble those of spaghetti westerns, and he gets decent performances from the cast (most of which are pretty big names). The first hour or so is solid, but it soon moves into the world of clichés and becomes a little stupid towards the end. Still, the final battle is a lot of fun and very entertaining. The film took a lot of panning when it was first released, and now that I've viewed it I can't understand why. Because I found 'The Quick and the Dead' to be a very fun and entertaining western romp that is very underrated.
While I thought this was a good movie there were some things that kept it from being a great film. The characters were pretty cookie cutter and they were introduced as so. They were pretty plain but on some of them the story behind the character was more interesting than what we saw on screen. The world we were seeing was grim and dirty as it should be but the stylized nature of the film made it seem as though it were a world separate than ours. When outside everything was dowsed in a yellow hue and it really seemed that this town was the only thing in the whole world at that time. The stylized feel went well with the shooting style. It was silly at times and a little cliche but it went well with the story that was being told. There was some great acting put forth by Hackman and Crowe and I found myself wanting to see them more. All in all it was a good story and it was filmed well but compared to westerns that were told with a more serious attitude it lacks a little in the end.
ok this movie was awsome it shows how strong one woman can be when forced!!!!
it just has one horrible scene in it but a good thing happens after that!!!!lol!!!
If you want a cheesy hollywood faux-western..this is your lucky day! Sharon Stone as a brooding mysterious lady gunslinger, Gene Hackman as the greedy evil town mayor, a wisecracking teen Leo Dicaprio who really just wants his Daddy to love him, and Russell Crowe as the outlaw turned repentant Preacher-man.
I won't lie, I'm a sucker for this movie. It's one of those ones that's always on tv when there's nothing else on, so I'll tune in. Crowe and DiCaprio rock. And I always start bawling in the end when L-...oops, I almost gave away the not-at-all-predictable and completely unexpected ending! ;)
This movie was entertaining. They assembled a great cast for this movie. Some parts of the plot were a little too over the top but what the heck it's a movie. I'd recommend this movie to people who love westerns.
I love this movie. It's just cool and filled with great actors. Sam Raimi should be doing more of this now that he is free from the Spidey movies. (Evil Dead 4 please Sam ;))
