I think a large part of the negative reaction comes from expectations about what the film is or should be.

First of all, this is not a remake of Tampopo, nor is it about food. It actually borrows more from "Like Water for Chocolate" than Tampopo, but the food subplot is an after...( read more)thought and a bit of a distraction.

It isn't really a rom-com though there is a romantic interest in there. Nor is it really a East meets West type of thing either though that certainly is an element.

It is a story about a young girl, who like many young people have wandered aimlessly expecting that life will just happen for them. The Japanese expectation that a big company will take care of them for life is not that much different from the American expectations. Our ramen girl discovers that such a lack of passion and spirit, even when the ingredients are there and all the right steps are followed will lead to a bland soup. A simple metaphor but done fairly well.

Brittany Murphy is surprisingly good as the ramen girl and her interactions with the gruff ramen-nazi (wonderfully played by Toshiyuki Nishida) are hilarious. The development of the relationship between the two of them was very well done.

I quite enjoyed this film and recommend it as a light pleasant diversion that brings a smile to your face - like a good bowl of ramen should...

I'm gonna give this one a 4.5 since Brittany just kicked the bucket. I will truly miss her. SHe was beautiful and had a pleasing personality. At least she did in most of her films. Ramen girl is a bout a girl who follows her long distance relationship boyfriend to japan. Whe...( read more)n she gets there, they hook up and it seems okish, then he leaves. She is then forced to work as a copy editor for a while. She then tries to perfect the art of cooking ramen noodles. It's kind of a zany outlandish thing to do for a girl like she portrays. It's somewhat hard to believe that passion for something so seemingly mediocre. The movie is about Passion for soup. But this translates into passion for anything. The love for your practice. When you put all of your being behind anything, and that skill is good, you have created art.

I really enjoyed this comedy of an American girl that trains to be a ramen chef after being dumped by her boyfriend in Tokyo. The cast is great especially Nishida as the grumpy owner of a ramen restaurant who takes Britanny Murphy's character Abby under his wing. You'll either lo...( read more)ve or hate Murphy's acting in this one - she's not bad. I found this to be an endearing movie but that's because of my interest in Japanese culture.

Brittany Murphy's acting was cringe-worthy, but i loved the spirit of this movie. How the Japanese always thrive for perfection in every aspect of their life.

An agreeable, if unmemorable, piece of entertaining, feel-good fluff.

This movie teaches us to always work hard and try to become the best. Great!
