An interesting premise and a strong first half make this film fairly watchable but towards the end the whole thing turns sour and into predictable god fearing nonsense. A real shame and a wasted opportunity but ok if it?s on TV.

It's hard to put my finger on what's wrong with this movie, but there seems to be something a little off. Which is a shame, because the idea behind it is a pretty good one, really. An ex-theist has dedicated her life to debunking religious superstition and phenomena and comes upo...( read more)n a town where apparently the ten plagues are apparently afflicting the area. I like the whole Rosemary's Baby/Wicker Man element to this film, but I think that the effects and character designs weight down this movie and lend it an inescapable ugliness. The performances by the actors are also a little off-putting, making an otherwise interesting story seem cheesy. This movie does succeed however in being relatively scary, even for a rather jaded horror fan.

Interesting to learn about the 10 plagues in this way. It was kinda boring in parts though.

A scientist specializing in debunking religious "miracles" is called in when a sleepy bayou town seems to be undergoing a Biblical plague. The Omen meets The X-Files in this supernatural chiller based firmly in the old school (or should that be Old Testament...?) It fulfills the ...( read more)usual expectations of the genre including tragic back story as to how Ms Swank "lost her faith", a sidekick who is a believer, portentous dreams (or are they?) and religious imagery. But the fact is, it actually works quite well. It is VERY like one of the religious mythology based X-Files stories, but a good one. The imagery is very well done, particularly the river of blood and a very good scene portraying the swarm of locusts (which reminded me a lot of The Mummy) and it works as an off beat thriller. Of course it's all very hokey, and it annoys me that the basis of this kind of thing is always the fact that The Bible was right and disbelieve at your peril, but if you enjoyed Constantine or The Gift, you'll more than likely enjoy this. Surprisingly entertaining.

Not even a great performance by Hillary Swank could save this cliche, predictable and entirely UN-scary horror film.

Wasted my precious time watching this movie. The trailer was quite convincing, but the movie was a total fail.
  • October 31, 2009
It's a very interesting movie. I liked the plot and I thought the film was cast well. But as others have pointed out, there is something off about the movie. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but something didn't quite make it stand out enough. I liked the twist at the end tho...( read more)ugh. And for the most part, I liked how the plagues turned out. Except for the cows. They looked too CGI, especially in the way they would fall down. It looked fake. Also at times the film felt a little slow moving.

But overall, it was entertaining enough. Not bad to watch on a day when you're stuck at home.
