  • November 3, 2009
Wasted my precious time watching this movie. The trailer was quite convincing, but the movie was a total fail.
  • October 31, 2009
It's a very interesting movie. I liked the plot and I thought the film was cast well. But as others have pointed out, there is something off about the movie. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but something didn't quite make it stand out enough. I liked the twist at the end tho...( read more)ugh. And for the most part, I liked how the plagues turned out. Except for the cows. They looked too CGI, especially in the way they would fall down. It looked fake. Also at times the film felt a little slow moving.

But overall, it was entertaining enough. Not bad to watch on a day when you're stuck at home.

GREAT WAY TO KNOW ABOUT THE 10 PLAGUES!
    GREAT TWIST AT THE END!
  • October 17, 2009
    Hollywood is horrible.
  • October 14, 2009
An interesting premise and a strong first half make this film fairly watchable but towards the end the whole thing turns sour and into predictable god fearing nonsense. A real shame and a wasted opportunity but ok if it?s on TV.

Sometimes, an Oscar winner headlining a B-movie is a good thing. The personae lends credibility to the production, allowing the audience a certain amount of leeway in enjoying a middling concept. Such is the case with The Reaping, a vehicle for Hilary Swank as a professor who deb...( read more)unks supposed Biblical miracles using science. It is because of Swank (and, to a lesser extent, and co-stars David Morrissey and Idris Elba) that the films manages to be anything but laughable. It's not without it's perks, though. The first 30 to 45 minutes stand up rather well as an unconventional who-dun-it, giving us a sense of small town, Southern folk.

Even the locations and sets turn out to be well designed and thought out. Shot in location in Louisiana, everything feels authentic to the setting, allowing us to become almost comfortable here. I'd even go on to say the first half-The Reaping only runs 99 minutes-is fairly competent storytelling. Then the entire bottom drops out, plunging us into a flashback prone, special effects disaster with a hopeless resolution and ending leaving us scratching our heads. Why is that? To be perfectly honest, the film forgets it's own internal logic. Katherine (that's Swank) spends all her time telling people why what they think are Biblical events are explained by science. This is her work, her passion...all of which is summarily thrown out the window thanks to some haunting warnings from a priest-friend who is never developed past the point of plot contrivance.

The Reaping goes wrong as it tries to delve deeper into it's own internal reality, stringing together too many subplots which come crashing together with no panache...no subtlety in the final 20 minutes or so. What does it add to Katherine's character to give her a religious background or a dead family? Not a whole lot, except to explain her skepticism a little girl from the swamp is evil incarnate. And about those flashbacks? They come in such a slipshod, herky jerky manner it's nearly impossible to figure out what's going on in them unless a character actually explains. When it comes to the information we need to get to the conclusion with Katherine, it all seems to be a blur.

The sudden left turn the story takes in the final act jars any sense of reality out of it. In a film comprised of science and explainable phenomenon, to introduce a satanic, other worldly element which really doesn't belong destroys what the narrative is trying to do. Fireballs falling out of the sky, landing on very specific targets may be Biblical, but it's not feasible. Especially when, previously, Katherine tells us exactly why certain things can't happen. It's a tale of two movies, slapped together in the middle without regard for thematic continuity. Do the fireballs falling out of the sky make Katherine believe again, after turning her back from religion? Or does she simply believe in the supernatural power of evil in the end?

It is not as bad as ome people claim it to be. The story is not bad at all. It's not good, I accept it, but it's an OK popcorn flick. It could've been much worse considering that Stephen Hopkins directed it.

    41/100

I have to see this film again.
  • September 3, 2009
The Reaping falls short of its premise. Sure, it?s a little jumpy in places, and some of the effects are pretty good. The ending, whilst a little predictable (and, as my friend Gemma pointed out, a little ?Hot Fuzz?), was a nice twist. But otherwise, it?s a bit long-winded, a ...( read more)bit predictable, and whilst it might have made a decent 45 minute-long X-Files episode, as a movie it doesn?t really hold your attention for long enough, and the flashbacks begin to get annoying after a little while. It was ok, but not great.

Heaven or Hell. Good or Evil. Now or Never
  • August 15, 2009
The story is basically ridiculous, it's scary but kinda annoying..
  • August 14, 2009
Not very original and only somewhat engaging. The plagues themselves are more like pesky annoyances. A lot like Rosemary's Baby, but with that dude who won an Oscar in Million Dollar Baby.
  • August 10, 2009
I like the mistery of this movie. I like Hillary Swank act. The story amazing and great. I didn't move myself dor watch this movie. Love it.
  • August 10, 2009
    A surprise ending , good twist .
  • August 2, 2009
Good acting from Swank. There's cliche element and biblical messages here and there but it keeps me entertained with some good scare. Not the best of its kind but far from worst
  • July 25, 2009
Well this movie reminded me a bit of "The Ninth Gate" or "Rosmary's baby", but for me it is not as good those movies. It is clear quite soon that there will be no logical explanation for the things happening, what did also take out a lot of suspense. Most of the movie there are o...( read more)nly two paths for the main character to go. So although the special effects are good the story was just not good enough to make it extraordinary enjoyable for me.

Should have been more to it.

Love this movie. it's one of my favorite movies. Annasophia Robb is really creepy in it. hilary swank is very sexy and excelent as usual. Idris Elba is an amazing actor. And respect to Manolo Cardona, Stephen Rea ia a beast, and David Morrissey is a favorite of mine.
  • July 8, 2009
Crap. A story full of holes and poorly put together. A complete waste of the very talented Hilary Swank and a waste of your time.
  • June 30, 2009
I'm not a fan of Hilary Swank and this role wasn't winning me over. The storyline, however, was really good. How the film showed the 10 plagues in the Bible was pretty sweet. The girl, Annasophia Robb, did a great job.
  • June 23, 2009
this can't even classify as a horror movie. You want horror and religion, go see the Exorcist
  • June 22, 2009
I originally watched this movie thinking it would suck. but I loved it! except for the seemingly random sex scene. The movie is not very scary by the way. But i loved that the girl was controlling the plagues and the plot twist at the end was cool. I saw it three times the firs...( read more)t week I owned it. The plot was quite unique and interesting. Most of it ended up fitting together well although there is one part that never really made sense to me. The detail is so tiny though that it doesn't really matter. This is going on my faves list.

    that was scaryyyy !!
  • June 20, 2009
J'ai pris trois coups avant de dépasser la première heure, c'est quand j'ai finalement dépassé cette partie que le film a pris plus de sens et est devenu le film que j'attendais...
  • June 14, 2009
The trailers made it look like so much more, but after watching the film, i felt i had wasted time. Infact i HAD wasted time.

A film i wished i never heard about.
  • June 5, 2009
This movie is a ok and not spooky but i feel sorry that all the kids were killed in the Basement for nothing.
  • June 4, 2009
I wasn't that impressed with the ending, partly becasue the previews made it look so good.

it's OHkay. i REALLY like hilary swank. it's a decent attempt at her first horror & believe me, it's better than most horror films i've seen..
  • May 9, 2009
It was "Okay". Pretty good story line although a tad far-fetched for my liking. I prefer realistic movies but it's fun once in a while to just be entertained, just like reading a good Fiction book. Hilary Swank did a nice, convincing job in her role. She made this movie by far. T...( read more)he other characters left little to be desired. Annasophia Robb is cute and all but had a limited role here. She did fine for that. This movie reminded me of some past films which tired to convince the viewer about religion. I don't think in this film that came across very strong. Other films did better but maybe that wasn't the main purpose here either. The ending was far-fetched but it worked I suppose. I need to be writing movies! I would say don't waste your time on this one unless you are a Swank fan. There are better selections on the shelf.

based on the biblical 10 plagues but not entirely

Finally I have seen a film that all my friends here on Flixster have watched. I think I am rating it a little higher then most of my friends, but I for one did enjoy this movie, I am not sure if its because I have spent time down in Louisiana or the fact that I like the bayou, or...( read more) the fact that the little twist at the end got me. Most films I can figure out but this one GOT ME. Enough said you have to watch it to figure that out. The plague's really caught my interest, the river of blood, the frogs falling out of the sky, which no one seem to bring up, they just brought up dead frogs. Idis Elba played an excellent part, He was better in the HBO Series the Wire. oh by the way I am one of those religious freaks but I do enjoy horror and everything else I watch. I have to give this one a 4 stars and I will add it to my collection.
