Plot: Continuing the story they began in 1978's THE HOBBIT, directors Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin present THE RETURN OF THE KING, the close to J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series. As hobbits Frodo an...( read more read more... )d Samwise head to Mount Doom to destroy the evil ring that brings plague to the land, they must overcome a number of obstacles--orcs, ring wraiths, the deadly Gollum, and the madness of the ring itself--while Gandalf and Aragon head an epic battle against the evil forces that threaten to destroy all of Middle-earth.

THE RETURN OF THE KING ends the cycle started in THE HOBBIT and continued in Ralph Bakshi's THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Viewers get to see an aged Bilbo Baggins contentedly smoking his pipe and listening to his nephew Frodo's tales. Orson Bean and John Huston reprise their roles as Bilbo and Gandalf. (Bean also lends his voice to Frodo.) And as with THE HOBBIT, there's plenty of thrilling action, masterfully painted backgrounds, and catchy Glenn Yarbrough songs.

This series of animated films are weird. Quite a bit of singing and poetry yet also quite appealing.

I have yet to be able to sit through the whole thing. A horrible adaptation, with a tone that fit more with the Hobbit than the most exciting installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The animation style just makes me cringe: it had nothing of the eerily dark Bakshi version, and couldn't even muster the archaic feel of The Hobbit cartoon.

A good retelling of Rings Vol 3. More accurate to the book than Jackson's, actually. Best part: The influence of the Ring through performance, music and eyes.

The cartoon that I watched from childhood over and over...Rankin & Bass do an excellent job with the animation! Oh...by the way, this movie is NOT rated R!

A better version of the story for my little ones. You get the happy yet sad ending without the gore of Peter Jackson's version and can still teach an appreciation of the literature.

In vain more of the fellowship cartoon and not the hobbit this story has issues but it is still enjoyable especially for young boys.

This animated feature is fine fare except that, for some odd reason, Rankin & Bass added musical segments ~which works for me with their Christmas features, but really misses the boat here.

I wish I could rate this lower. The electric guitars in the orc song "Where There's a Whip, There's a Way" deserve negative stars all by themselves . . .

So incredibly bad. At least the animated Lord of the Rings wasn't a musical. We can't say that here. Although "Frodo of the Nine Fingers" is a catchy tune.

The Annoying singing voice from The Hobbit is back, only he sings more. This is in here because as a kid I was a Tolkien fan and I liked anything that had to do with the LotR books.
