I liked how it started, but man the story was all over the road like Mel Gibson. I can't figure out what it was going for, but it failed.
With this movie they really make you think there's this big conspiracy going on so you're hoping for some kind of twist in the end, but it doesn't happen. You're left feeling a bit confused and wondering why they added and kept certain scenes to begin with.
Then they had so many tangents going to this film that I really don't think they knew where they wanted to go with it.
Interesting flick. Gorgerous backdrop. Edward Burns surprised me having such quiet depth. Movie wasn't overly exciting or origional but it was a very well done and worth a watch if simply for the beauty of the Nova Scotia setting!
The movie starts out fairly well but ends up being one choppy piece of work.
The acting somewhat sucked from just about everybody. Edward Burns had his good moments but he fails to reel you in emotionally and therefore, you don't sympathize with his character in the end. Rachelle Lefevre has her good moments as well...they are both so close and yet so far from getting into character.
The storyline itself was alright. Burns is a detective trying to solve a mysterious death and in turn is illuminated by his own brother's suicide. It would have been fine if they kept the whole "fling" thing (between Burns and Ehle) out of it. For one, it was pointless; it had nothing to do with the story...and two, you don't even see it coming! You can kinda tell they like each other from the glances...but at one point she just jumps on him (she's engaged, mind you) and the whole bedroom scene takes off from there. It just didn't feel right within the movie itself and the chemistry between the two was non-existant but they tried to make it work. They failed. Miserably. And the actual filming effect they were going for, for that scene didn't work either. Apparently they were trying this blur effect and if anything it looked more like poor camera handling.

I wanted soo much to like this film, but the horrible acting made it hard to like any of the characters and the choppiness of the story made it even more difficult.
This is, of course, just my opinion.
Not a bad film...kinda slow going and the acting could have been a little better. All in all not too bad.
This is the best example of what goes wrong when you make a film TOO MUCH like the book its based off of. I adore the book, but found myself being able to quote their script line by line. Almost good, but they could have done so much better.
Twas alright. I can't say that I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time, but it wasn't bad either.
awful. i could only watch 30 minutes before i shut it off. badly written and directed. definitely a first timer.
I just got done watching this movie yesterday. this was an awesome moive i really recommend it. it's a sad movie and reminded me of someone special. but this is a really really good movie. I really liked it.
I read someone else's review about them getting the feeling that this was meant to be read in a novel and not as interesting as a movie and I think they're probably right. The movie wasn't so bad eventhough I did roll my eyes at the fact that the lead character's conclusion was what was assumed from the beginning. The "spirit of the dead boy" angle wasn't cleverly done and died quite quickly. I have not read the book but I'm guessing that the book is probably better than this film.
While watching this I thought "this seems like it came from a book", turns out it does! I'm sure that the book was pretty good, the movie was just average. It's a story-telling kind of movie, not much action and is pretty slow.
