bleak and difficult to watch at times. thoroughly enjoyable.

In a post-apocalyptic world, I imagine there would be little joy or happiness to be found. The world would be bleak and unforgiving on those who survived (assuming any survivors would remain.) The bond between family would be reinforced; but it would also hang on a fragile thread...( read more). In essence, the world as we know it would end for everyone--including those who still live.

The Road is the latest film in a string of these post-doomsday features that present this pessimistic premise as a plausibility. The difference with this movie is that it does not, in any way, rely on computer-generated imagery; gimmicks or visual tricks; and definitely not on any sort of world-wide, slice-of-life showcases. It follows the life of, primarily, two characters willing themselves to survive in a world that really isn't worth living in anymore.

Viggo Mortensen plays the dismayed father of a young boy with his he travels. After the unnamed catastrophe that ensued and ended their world, they must move out of their home due to predatory, mercenary-type humans that have lost their humanity and are out to hunt and harvest others as food and prey. They travel along a road, which sometimes leads them into more trouble and obstacles than if they'd stayed off the path.

The movie is really an examination of the way we, as humankind, would react or would descend into barbarism if this scenario were a real-life one. All semblance of dignity would be lost or overshadowed by a voracious, primal urge and instinct to survive at all costs. Some good would still remain (as is encountered in a few characters along this road the two travel.) But much more peril and fright would have to be experienced in order to reach any sort of rewarding conclusion.

The film itself is much too stark in tone for the casual viewer. But for those who are a bit more patient with pacing and who aren't expecting an action-esque, Will Smithified version of the apocalypse, this movie might deliver some genuine nuggets of realism and cinematic resonance. In the end, the brilliant performances by the film's two main actors, despite their greatness, isn't enough to lift this movie from the low valley of misery and loathing it has created for itself. There is simply not enough hope to look forward to or be rewarded with during the entire story arc of this film.

A decent movie that was lack luster. It had the potential, but it lacked something. This is a case of too much of my personal state of mind influencing the way I read and felt about the film so it's likely to get a higher rating on a second viewing. All the acting was excellent. I wasn't as affected by it as I was by the book though, but I'm not entirely sure wh...( read more)y. I love the very idea of not ever needing to know WHY the world is in this state to be able to what how the man and the boy deal with living in this new world. The end wound up feeling like a bit of a cop out in the film, even though I think in the book it was very similar. My inability to get as fully into the man's head was a problem here. I guess that watching this along on Christmas day could effect my reading of the film as well.

What a dismally brilliant film, that which DOES do the book justice. Cormac McCarthy is a genius..and enough of one to NOT make his novels seem like sheer drivel in the eyes of hollywood. I was afraid this would not be a faithful representation of the novel but it is. I wasn't sure a film could manage the setting but it is stunning. Highly disturbing, leaves little hope, leaves little answered, contains a few overly long scenes.
  • December 17, 2009
Sombre et proche du désespoir, La Route égrène son road trip entre un père et son fils avec un rythme quasi contemplatif. Le film manque de souffle mais l'interprétation de Viggo Mortensen est époustouffante.
  • December 17, 2009
This movie was depressing. I wanted to hope that the father and son would find a place to make a better life, but they were in a hopeless situation. It was an interesting premise.
  • December 16, 2009
Fascinating, sad story. Well crafted, there weren't any moments that didn't feel very real. Viggo Mortensen was perfect in the role.
  • December 14, 2009

  • December 13, 2009
To say this film is beautiful is difficult. Visually it is stunning, but its story is ugly. No doubt words like bleak and stark will be attached, and they are all true.

    THE ROAD (2009)
    dir. John Hillcoat
cast. Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron

Like last year's Blindness, The Road¨is based on a beloved novel, acclaimed by the public and the critics. Both movies dont only shared high expectation but also the

...( read more) same problems when the story is translated into the movie medium. Characters are the same, and so is the storyline, but whats missing are the words of the authors that made those books as amazing as they were in the first place.

John Hillcoat's film is based on a novel written by Cormac McCarthy, who also wrote the book adapted by the Coens two years ago, No Country For Old Men. I wont compare McCarthy's work with Hillcoat's adaptation, cause its very faithful. The storytelling in the other hand is what makes this film a disappointment. Lets make something clear though, I'll take a disappointment like The Road any day over most movies coming out of Hollywood.

Performances are good. Viggo Mortensen is intense as usual and his eyes translate everything his character feels or thinks. Kodi Smith-McPhee as his kid in this post-apocalypse world is annoying, just like most children in movies where they have to be adult before their age. I wouldnt be surprised to see Robert Duvall get a nomination at some awards show for his 5-minute appearance.

The Road is surprisingly not too slow, there is always something going on and it serves the story and / or the themes to develop. Its definitely well-adapted by Joe Penhall. So why is The Road such a disappointment with all those qualities ? I didnt feel anything. Hillcoat tries too hard to move his audience without being manipulative. I didnt feel the emotions, yet, the film didnt feel bleak enough. I wont blame my expectations, The Road simply isnt the award-worthy movie that was promised to us. Its good though.

HATED it. Seriously, how can you throw Charlize Theron, Viggo Mortensen - AND his nudity (twice!), cannibalism and a few genuinely terrifying moments together and still have a nauseating movie? What's with all the doom and apocalyptic gloom in the pop culture lately, anyway? The ...( read more)fact that this flick is failry well made (except for the PUKETASTIC ending) actually makes it even WORSE. I don't want to have a gut-wrenching experience on a Friday night after a zombiefying work week during the Xmas rush (AND pay for it!). Maybe those who dig chick flicks would enjoy it. Yuck.

This is such a pedestrian thing to say, but God, the book was so much better.

  • December 9, 2009
    This looks really good.
  • December 9, 2009
Wow this was shit. I guess Viggo put in a good performance but there was simply no story. Don't tell me that "survival" was the story. The book MUST have been better. It was simply boring and unattached.
  • December 7, 2009
Cant wait to see this.Viggo Mortensen is a great actor.
