Now THIS is where it's at! Chances are though, unless you're a huge Beatles fan, quite a few of the jokes WILL go over your head. (Good thing I'm a huge fan then. ;)) Still enjoyable nevertheless!
I completely hated this movie.
The Beatles were major, as teens in the 60's we studied their faces, voices and manners in magazines, albums, TV & movies... they were as familiar as our best friends. This movie was mocking them. The Beatles own movies are "LIKE THIS"...??? Flixster is way off on that.
In retrospect, I don't remember why I didn't find this movie as funny as I'd hoped. It's really everything I love about comedy roled into one--satire, parody, British humour, Monty Python, early SNL, sight gags, mockumentaries...really an awesome film. I like Spinal Tap better, though.
An extremely funny parody of The Beatles, even including George Harrison as a guest star :D Hilarious, especially when you know what they are alluding to :)
A really funny movie. Eric Idle did a great job. A must see if you are a big Beatles fan. If you don't like the Beatles then you will miss most of the jokes.
What can I say? Neil Innes is the star of this film, for me; he really is the Master of Pastiche. His songs are almost on a par with those he's parodying - an amazing display of talent. Mix this in with the Python-humour of Idle, sprinkle in many excellent cameos...and you have a superb mockumentary. "...Barry's haunting ballad, 'When You Find The Girl Of Your Dreams In The Arms Of Some Scotsmen From Hull'." Just can't fuck with this!
the best mockumentry ever. if you like or even hate the beatles, then you must watch this. it's like making fun of WWII with Eric Idle as Hitler, it should not excist but there is a reason it's there. It's funny. What? Were you expecting a big speech? I'm not fucking Tom Hanks. I don't make a pointless essay of everything that has happened so far in a film at the end, making the audience wait another 15 minutes until they can walk out in rage to see the new johhny depp film. The point is it's a good film okay. Watch it!!!
If you like the Beatles and you like very daggy humour, then this is right up your alley! Not for the faint hearted. Actually, the faint hearted will laugh until they break down crying, but it's definitely not for the numb funnyboned.
This Beatles / Python / Bonzo mash-up is loving send-up of the Beatles. Serious Beatles fans will find it full of nudge-nudge in-jokes, plus some of the best music the Beatles never wrote, courtesy of Neil Innes. Never mind the trousers; this is great stuff!
For the TRUE Beatles fan! A more than general working knowledge of the Beatles' history is needed to catch most of the jokes, but for those of us who meet that standard, this film is HILARIOUS!
I thought i'd enjoy this a whole lot more than I did. It's a mockumentary (though I think that term was yet to be coined) about a british band who defined the sixties. It's full of songs which are so close to the original beatles tracks but are slightly different (a joke which continues to not be that funny all through the film)...which is a shame because it features Neil Innes of the Bonzo Dog Doh Dah Band who are brilliant. The rest of the term are brilliant, there's Eric Idle and Michael Palin from Python, alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, James Belushi (who should've been in it a lot more), Mick Jagger, Paul Simon and even George Harrison! At times it feels like Python but it's just not as funny as you want it to be and the songs aren't funny and fill too much screen time. Oh well, watch Spinal Tap instead.
Along the same lines as Spinal Tap, Bad News and Strange Fruit (the name of the latter band's movie escapes me though), this is a mockumentary of a Beatles parody band. There isn't as much room for creative parody when the satire is focused on one band, though, so I'd recommend Spinal Tap and the Comic Strip's Bad News episodes over this because they parody a whole genre rather than one band.
