Not someone to sit at home in the traditional role of a housewife, Mrs. Beeton started work in her husband's business, initially as an editor correcting English but then writing some of the columns herself. It as at this point that she developed an idea for a cookbook and Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management was born. Her life was not an easy one however. The publishing business went bankrupt, she lost two children at a young age and had several miscarriages. She died at the age of 28.

"The Secret Life of Mrs Beeton" is a lighthearted biopic that depicts the rather tragic life of an enterprising Victorian woman who revolutionized the cookbook and died at age 28. You might think that you couldn't care less about her, but the film will definitely make you change ...( read more)your mind. Anna Madeley (who was Lucy Steele in the excellent BBC mini-series "Sense and Sensibility") is wonderful in the title role, and the enthusiasm the film conveys for its subject almost made me buy the recently published biography of Isabella Beeton. BBC productions usually shine, and this is one of the better ones.
