  • November 19, 2009
Kubricks adaptation is a far cry from Stephen Kings novel. He takes it in a whole different direction which is equally brilliant and unnerving, comparatively. Its the right mixture of fear, insanity, and superior acting that will never make your mind wander, even while watching i...( read more)t for the 20th time or 50th

Who could ever forget Jack Nicholson in this movie. He is one of the greatest actors of all time combined with one of the greatest directors Stanley Kubrick
  • November 17, 2009
    omg.. scarry as hellz!
  • November 17, 2009
Thrillingly genius. Based on Stephen King's story, Kubrick turns The Shining into a severely disturbing, blood-curdling thriller/horror flick that will leave you on the edge of your seat, if not cowering behind some cushions. Absolutely incredible.

hated it when i first saw it but have realised just how excellent it is upon recent viewing.

Ahahah, io, Anna G, non mi metterò certo a commentare Shining, perché mi sentirei particolarmente scema.
Ci sono tante persone che non lo guardano per "paura di aver paura", ah, che razza di capolavoro si perdono <3

All works and no play makes Jack a dull boy!!!
  • November 11, 2009
I don't think this was my type of film. It was creepy and the performances were great but it still bored me most of the time.
  • November 9, 2009
Ok, I know this is supposed to be a classic, and I did read the book and enjoy it, but somehow I just thought this was not anywhere near good enough. Married to horse face woman should've been enough for him to go insane, haha. Really, the expressions throughout the movie are wha...( read more)t made it hilarious.

I must agree that this film truly deserves to be called a classic. Scary may be one of the ways to describe it, however, when I think of a scary movie, what usually comes to mind is someone like Jason or Michael Myers. I guess you can say the same thing about how Jack Nicholson p...( read more)layed Jack Torrance esp during the iconic "Here's Johnny!!!" scene. And what pure horror you get from Shelley Duvall's reaction just puts the nail on the coffin. Who would want to be isolated in a huge, old hotel with an axe-wielding madman, neh? Even if it was your husband, that would still be a horrific predicament.

On the downside, the only minor problem I had with this movie is that it was long and tended to drag. I have yet to read the novel so there's no way for me to compare, and to check consistency-wise.

whenever it showed the girls was when it was scary, overreacting in parts though, + differences in story then the book version
probably my 2nd favourite horror movie of all time after the ring
  • November 4, 2009
it's a rare thing to see the word 'classic' and 'horror' in one sentence.,
but let me tell you, the shining is undeniably a classic horror movie.,
    a must see..
  • November 3, 2009
One of the very, very few movies that scares me each and every time I watch it.

Love the movie but still prefer the book anyway! Jack did a very good job though! The twins are mad scary!!
  • November 2, 2009
This is a very slow-paced movie but it is also a very interesting movie with a well-worthy ending. This is the movie that got you saying "Here's Johnny" when you popped your head in the door and this is the movie to blame for all the times REDRUM randomly echoed into your head. Any film that features Jack Nicholson in full-on, axe-wielding psycho mode has got to be worth watching.

After seeing 'Maximum Overdrive' and '1408', I thought I would never enjoy another horror film based on a Stephen king novel, but 'The Shining' proved me wrong. This was by far the weirdest movie I've ever seen. It was freaky, but not as freaky as people say it is. It's de...( read more)finitely in my Top 10. The ending kind of confused though. I still have questions about the plot that need to be answered, but anway 'The Shining' is one of the best horror films of all time!

This is my new scariest movie that I've ever seen. From the very start of the film with those long sweeping shots of the great big lake and the winding road, the score itself starts to fill you with a sense of uneasiness. The moment that you realise that you're in for a ride, how...( read more)ever, is that first time that Tony shows Danny why he doesn't want to go to the hotel and all that blood shows up. Leave it to Kubrick to make something so incredibly surreal which scares the willies out of you. Jack Nicholson's performance, now immortalised in memory, is word and picture perfect the whole way through. The way that he slowly progresses into this world of madness which we can always see, just at the back of those haunting eyes. Danny Lloyd, too, plays strange little Danny perfectly, switching between all knowing and angry Tony and scared little Danny. Shelley Duvall is amazing as well, playing her part of concerned to the point of frantic with such conviction and truth that it's impossible not to feel scared on her behalf. But the real star of the show is the man behind the camera, Stanley Kubrick. After already having made such brilliant films as 2001 A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange, The Shining was not the logical next step. In the first place it was a completely different genre with different styles and different objectives, but it was also a very risky choice, as the content of the film would be difficult for audiences to be drawn to. However, Kubrick went about it in the same fashion as he usually does; settling for nothing less than perfection. Legend has it that he made Duvall do one take 127 times until she got it right. But the result is purely exquisite. The amazing use of steadicam is prevalent throughout, especially with Danny's trike in the hotel. This film is a must see.

    Defining Scene:
The iconic and immortal, "Here's JOHNNY!" One of cinema's greatest moments.

Something tells me this would happen with my family if we lived in a snowed in empty mansion. My mother would annoy my father to the point of breakdown where he eventually hallucinates and has conversations with the hotels phantom staff.
  • October 23, 2009
Easily the best film adaptation of a Stephen King novel ever done and only rivaled by The Green Mile in terms of King stories-turned films. Of course this is the only one that starred Jack Nicholson when his talent and career were blasting off into the stratosphere. Just a flat o...( read more)ut disturbingly good thriller/borderline horror film. You can just feel the intensity and suspense in every scene and a brilliant use of empty space and soundtrack to paint the picture. Scared the bejesus out of me when I was 12. • October 23, 2009
    Nicholson lo bordo !!!
  • October 21, 2009
Considering the talent involved, I must say I was a bit disappointed. However, it has an incredibly good atmosphere as well as some very chilling and eerie moments. The acting is great. But it is just too slow moving at times where nothing is happening.
  • October 19, 2009
I appreciate this film more every time I watch it. Amazing.
  • October 14, 2009
One of the few Stephen King adaptations that was successful on the big screen. There are a lot of people that do not like Kubrick but they can't deny this movie was clearly good. Jack Nicholsons portrayal of Jack Torrance was for lack of a better word...inspiring.
