Plot:
Lynch fans will not be disappointed. Lynch discusses his earliest short works (from his first film through the short preceding Blue Velvet), all of which are terrific and visually arresting.
"So Fucked Up" highlight:
"The Alphabet", sound in "The Amputee"
Agora o "Grandmother"(1970) sim vale a pena, é surreal!
"The Cowboy and the Frenchman"(1987) é hilariante!
Not a David Lynch fan, but I am a biography fan and I think I would enjoy his talking about his work. Passion is always interesting, I think.
The most interesting for me of all the shorts on this was "The Grandmother". All were farrr out though in that David Lynch kinda far-outness way. Personally? What I enjoyed most was watching and hearing him talk about each of these short films - what they meant to him and how they came about.
A pretty damn good collection-- the only real disappointment I had was its lack of "Rabbits"
Six Men Getting Sick (Six times) was an interesting little thing to watch, and even early on, Lynch knew how to be impeccably fucked up.
The Alphabet is my favorite of the lot here. It's a taut and interesting little art film, to say the least. Lynch's animation is reminiscent of the stuff in Monty Python, except much much darker.
The Grandmother was basically The Alphabet all-grown up(Or at least in teen years, if you count Eraserhead as the all-grown-up bit) Although a bit slow or hackneyed at times, it was still a very interesting watch that resembled German Expressionism fiercely.
The Amputee was probably the actual creepiest of them all. A single shot, a woman narrating an ambiguous situation/relationship between her and a man, while she bleeds through her leg-stumps... Classic Lynch, really.
The Cowboy And the Frenchman was hilarious and slapstick, but in a very Lynchly surreal way. Some of it is just plain stupid, but it's certainly an interesting way that David Lynch sees the French...
Lumier: Premonitions Following an Evil Deed is tied for my favourite next to The Alphabet. The concept behind that project is really great ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumi%C3%A8re_et_compagnie ) And Lynch was able to very well adapt to 51 gritty seconds.
All and all, a pretty good little collection-- Although I prefer his features.
(The Alphabet y The Grandmother son joyas surrealistas).
what a great collection of short films. they are absurd horrifying and entertaining at the same time. lynch gives great commentary before each one begins. normally i never watch those but these are just as good as the films. oh i love you lynch haha.
Some are amazing (eg The Alphabet), some are pretty boring (eg The Grandmother) but it amounts to a pretty decent package. Ironically, the points where he talks and introduces each short film is more interesting than each film itself, really. The problem is, that most Lynch movies need a long time to develop the characters and the storyline because there's usually a lot too them, these are just too artsy fartsy at times and I would have rather been watching David Lynch talk for an hour and a half or a full lengthed feature film.
Fascinating early works of David Lynch. I thought the Alphabet was quite frightening. I also loved the use of colours in The Grandmother too. The Cowboy & The Frenchman was my favourite, but all of the short films were great. I also liked David Lynch's introductions to each film.
"The Grandmother" is some Freudian nightmare/fantasy,and definitely the best of the bunch. "Premonitions Following An Evil Deed" is a little B&W microcosm of "Twin Peaks",shot in a one minute continuous take for the commemorative "Lumiere & Company". The rest are pretty cool shorts(although stop-motion primitive)."The Amputee" is worth a laugh!
