I dont remember a lot about this movie. I first saw this film 10 years ago. I haven't seen it since but I remember this British TV special being a half an hour piece of christmas magic.

Raymond Briggs was always a bit of a childhood hero of mine. It seems that the fact that all his storeys were actually quite dark was only ever picked up and enjoyed by children. The ending of this story is absolutely devastating and yet it's the bit everyone seems to forget and the bit where parents and grandparents alike would either fast-forward or stop completely so as not to upset the kids. I always appreciated Briggs's harsh realism, Aled Jones's voice less so though. I know I know, it wasn't Aled Jones...

Christmas Movie Review Mania
Episode #3: The Snowman
Don't think that I'm a bad guy or a hater but I don't watch "Frosty the Snowman" much during the Christmas season. I watch another Christmas special about a snowman coming to life. Its entitled "The Snowman" and it is one of the most beautiful things I've ever laid eyes on.
It is a silent film. There is music to add more emotion. It tells of a boy whose snowman comes to life and they both embark on a magical adventure on Christmas Eve. Its a very simple film.
The animation is wonderful and amazing. The story is well told. You'll wonder this short film in awe. I cry everytime I watch this. I need you to watch this to know why I cry when I watch this.
A beautiful Christmas special. Take that, Frosty!

though i dont remember much about the movie i remember how magical and wonderful it was though the only thing i didn't like about it was the ending not that it was terrible but it was just so freaking depressing and there wasn't even one happy thing about it. Most children Christmas movies have something uplifting at the end but this movie just says life sucks, merry Christmas. but other than that it truly is a wonderful Christmas film

I remeber The Snowman from when I was a kid and often wondered what the hell David Bowie had to do with it. The animation is still captivating today and the (mostly) lack of dialogue makes it all the better. The music gets a little ominous for a kids movie, but that ending is just a… More
I remeber The Snowman from when I was a kid and often wondered what the hell David Bowie had to do with it. The animation is still captivating today and the (mostly) lack of dialogue makes it all the better. The music gets a little ominous for a kids movie, but that ending is just a heartbreaking kick in the nuts. Spoiler alert: "Here's a scarf kid. Your friend's dead."

I've been casting about for a Christmas movie with which to send my Flixster friends a seasonal message, and this one will do very nicely. One of my primary school teachers was obsessed with this film and used to screen it for us every year, without fail. Consequently, I cannot watch The Snowman without thinking of enormous wooden television sets on trolleys and top-loader VHS machines. I must have seen it twenty times and -- whether induced by childhood nostalgia or the quality of the film itself -- it still brings a tear to my eye.

Truly special and magical animated movie about a boy and his snowman. They fly away to the land where the other snow-people are, and dance. I like the songs in it.

Surrealistic children's Christmas tale. A soft dreamlike pallet of colors and music. Even when I was growing up in the late '80s and '90s I remember that this had a hard time keeping my attention for a half hour without dialog and was a bit scary. I appreciated the animation and storytelling more as I got a bit older. I wonder if kids today can sit through this and enjoy the slower pace.

This is one of the touching animation classics I have seen for Christmas. Loved the classic which included David Bowie. A favorite of mine.

Wow, I grew up on this, I used to watch it alot as a child. I watched it this Christmas for the first time in years and it's still great. There is no dialog, just all facial expressions, sounds, and music. It was nominated for best animated short in 1982, but sadly didn't win. It is based off the story of the same name by Raymoond Briggs. It is a classic, a must see. The animation is beautiful, and the soundtrack is incredible.
