A very old movie, it was a very popular musical to sing parts of at my old elementary school. I was jealous of the kids who got to sing any song from it.
This movie is so sweet, it makes you sick. Every part of it is so pink and fluffy and the only thing missing are singing animals. Kids are very good, grass is very green, sky oh so blue. Singing nuns are just to much. There are two movies in there, one being the love musical about confused girl who wants to become a nun, but ends up marrying very rich and handsome guy. The other is one about family who fled their beloved country so they would not be the part of Nazi regime. Despite the odds, this combination works rather well, and presence of this gloomy part is what saves entire movie from drowning in sugar.
The last time I saw it I was just a little kid. I think I used to have more time in a day back then, because I do not remember this film being so long! That being said, I still love it.
You are the twelfth in a long line of governesses who have come here to look after my children since their mother died. I trust you will be an improvement on the last one. She stayed only two hours.
Directed by: Robert Wise Starring: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood
Genre: Biography/Drama/Family/Musical
Running time: 174 minutes
My review:
Maria is a failure as a nun. The Mother Superior sends her off in answer to a letter from a retired naval captain for a governess for his seven children. She goes to their house and finds that she is the latest in a long line of governesses run off by the children. She teaches the children to sing and that becomes their bonding force, of course leading her to fall in love with their father and marries him. As this is happening Austria votes to be assumed by Germany on the eve of World war II. This film is a delight to family films everywhere because the songs that were sung by the characters were just so beautiful and very heartfelt. I am unsure what the most emotional story is because they all were just beautiful in every way. My favourite song from the film is probably My Favourite Things which is sung by Julie Andrews. I loved the opening song The Sound Of Music because it was beautifully filmed because it was sung in a field and was really well directed aswell. That scene is my favourite scene from the film and is one of the most beautiful and heartwarming film scenes that I have ever seen. I love the Von Trapp house and the neighbourhood aswell. This film is set in Salzburg, Austria. After seeing this film, I really would like to visit Salzburg. It looks like a beautiful and peaceful place to be in. Julie Andrews delivers an absolutely awesome performance as Maria because Julie brought extreme delight to Maria not just because Maria is a delightful character but Mary Poppins was a really delightful person too who was also portrayed by Julie Andrews. Julie makes Maria a gorgeous and sexy young woman who wants to be a nun but then changes her mind and looks after the Von Trapp children. I find Maria very similar to Mary Poppins because of the musical style, the beautiful looks and delight but mostly her stubborness towards what she likes to do. Julie Andrews was robbed off her second Oscar in The Sound Of Music. But she did win an Oscar for her performance as Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins. Christopher Plummer delivers a satisfactory performance as Captain Baron Von Trapp. His acting skills werent that good in this film but I personally think that his singing was good. But Christopher made Captain Von Trapp a fearful character aswell as a loving father aswell. He didnt act so loving in the beginning but when he realises what he has been doing, he soon reconsiders and becomes extremely proud of his children no matter what they do. Robert Wise makes this film a beautiful musical masterpiece that people will always but in their list for greatest musicals of all time. As far as I am concerned, Robert Wise directed this film like it truly meant something to him as if it was a real life story particularly the scene at the beginning in the field when Maria is singing The Sound Of Music which is another reason why that is my favourite scene of the film. This film is a typical musical in some ways because there are beautiful costumes, sceneries and beautiful and delightful characters too. Also because the title will obviously be a musical even before you see it because it states two words that are to do with music already. They are Sound of Music itself. This film sort of shows what music really is and what passion it brings out and the pleasure it brings to people in this world. The relationship between Maria and Captain Von Trapp is hidden feelings for each other. Maria feels trapped because she is a nun and she has fallen in love. Also, Maria doesnt want to upset the other nuns in the nunnery. But there is one who advices her to make the right decisions regards to her feelings. She loves all of the children too and she feels torn because she doesnt want to upset them because they lost their mother and she doesnt want them to feel like she is a replacement to their late real mother. The one child that Maria has a deep relationship with is Leisl Von Trapp because she is a a typical teenager who is in love but she doesnt want her father to know and she talks to Maria for support and advice. Their relationship becomes very personal too. The largest twist is definitely when Captain Von Trapp starts to hear the children sing and he soon realises how good Maria has been to the children and also when Maria leaves the Von Trapp house but then eventually returns after advice from Mother Abbess. There isnt any violence, sex references or bad language at all. That main reason is because it is a film for the family. The Sound Mixing is amazing from all the songs and so is the Art Direction and Costume Design too. The Sound Of Music was an Academy Award winner of Best Picture 1965, Best Director (Robert Wise), Best Sound, Best Score and Best Film Editing but was a nomination for Best Leading Actress (Julie Andrews), Best Supporting Actress (Peggy Wood), Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. This film should have had another Best Supporting Actress nomination for Charmain Carr as Liesl Von Trapp and possible Best Screenplay too. This film teaches us about sticking close to your family and that you should always be proud of your children no matter what they do with their lives and also that if you feel down or upset about anything this film teaches us that it is optional that singing a song is a great choice to cheer you up. Whenever I am down or upset, I take the advice from this film and sing a few songs from any musical which is why musicals are my third favourite film genres. This film achieved almost everything for me like the beautiful songs, beautiful children, beautiful story and beautiful sceneries too. However, I couldnt quite feel the love chemistry between Maria and Captain Von Trapp. This is my mothers favourite film which is another reason why I love this film so much too.
Oh, I love this movie. I look forward to watching it every christmas. The songs are great and the way in which Julia handled the kids was just fun loving.
One of the best ! I can watch it over and over ! Love Julie, love the music. This came out while I was living in Germany and we went to Austria to see all the places that the movie was filmed in .
Não poderia deixar de gostar deste filme, porque foi o primeiro filme que fui ver ao cinema, um classico que os meus pais queriam e achavam que seria indicado para uma jovem de 12 anos.
A musica, as imagens a propria historia em si continua a fascinar-me.
After many months of pressure by my friend Stephanie, I finally gave in and watched THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and I thank her for introducing me to this magical, heartwarming movie. It's obviously a classic, and has some of my favorite things (no pun intended): beautiful shots, lovely score, some nice songs, great costumes, amazing performances (by the queen Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer), and good writing and directing. The whole Nazi story is an excellent contrast to the overwhelming "niceness" of the film, and the last third is great (reminded me a little of Hitchcock).
Finally I saw it complete! The film I watched thousand of times when I was very little but only till the part of "Farewell" is too long, and there are some songs that made me sleep, but the casting, the music, the... everything is a dream. Not my favourite but now I know why it's the favourite musical of many.
Julie Andrews makes a very delightful performance as the real-life recalcitrant nun who become governess to the seven kids of an austere baron. Wonderful memorable songs, such as "Climb Every Mountain" and "Edelweiss", are brilliantly integrated.
the hills are alive with the sound of music ... i go to the hills when my heart is lonely, i know i will hear what i heard before, my heart will be blessed with the sound of music, and i'll sing once more.
I'm sorry but I hate this film and would give it less if I could. Call me a stupid, insensitive male but hey, that's me.
The minute Julie Andrews starts singing I run for the hills and I find the songs so ridiculous and bad it's unreal i.e. "Adieu, adieu and you and you and you." I mean come on!
this is the all-time musical movie.... the best one i've ever watched.. i've seen this a lot of times.... and u will want to watch it even if u are already thru with it.... children would love it.....
This movie Rocks! Just watch this movie before work every day and you are guaranteed to be in a great mood no matter what. The only problem is you will have to wake up 3 hours earlier to watch it. The Best Movie ever made. Julie Andrews would kick Batmans ass!
