This film was an excellent revenge film but I expected more of this film. I got a bit lost about half way through with the poker matches. Excellent performances from Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Awesome return to George Roy Hill, Paul Newman and Robert Redford films after Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. I have seen better revenge films but this film was still really good.
This took home the Academy Award winner for Best Picture in 1973, and deservedly so, featuring some very skillful writing. The movie takes place in 1930's Chicago, which is captured nicely with a rousing ragtime score bringing out the feel of the times. There we are introduced to conman Johnny (Redford) and his buddy Luther, pulling out their latest stunt, but in doing so, they anger a big time crime lord out of New York, who sets out to have them hunted for interfering with his connections. While Johnny hides safely in seclusion, Luther is killed, causing Johnny to flee to veteran con artist Harry (Newman). Together they plan on getting revenge on the crime lord through one of the most elaborate and convincing stings ever pulled off. Although not flawless, this movie deserves the credit it has received. It doesn't flow by with a very brisk pace, but once the two con artists' plan comes into fruition, it takes off with great entertainment. Maybe the best thing about this movie is how it keeps you guessing: what could have been trite or predictable, it winds up being a complicated and surprising story that won't reveal itself completely until the very end. In fact, it is such a way, that rewinding the movie is helpful when trying to follow the plot's twists and turns, and looking back, everything is fabricated quite ingeniously by the writers here. It may go on awhile, but this is worth the wait all the way until the gripping finale.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (aka Paul Newman and Robert Redford, along with Director George Roy Hill) are back -- reincarnated this time in Fedoras and 1930s pin-stripe suits.
There's a simple joy in watching these two hustlers cheat the cheaters (led by the menacing Robert Shaw) to the tune of Scott Joplin's classic ragtime music.
Great production values, a slick pace (for its time), a good dose of twists and turns, and a wonderful supporting cast helped this film win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
A clever film that leaves you full of anticipation through most of it. Best film of the 1970s that I have seen thus far (I am not a big Godfather fan.)
Woooo! THE definite perfect set-up classic. You first saw them in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and now both Redforf and Newman return in their full glory to pull off the best deceive ever (and what a cute classic soundtrack ^_^ :)
Was there ever a better pair than Paul Newman and Robert Redford? I think not. This second pairing of the two earned a Best Picture Oscar. I have always loved this film for its incredible usage of the wonderful Scott Joplin music which I learned to play on the piano because I thought this movies is so awesome and cool. I still do. This film exudes coolness and fun and Paul Newman and Robert Redford aren't the only two that exemplified this in the film. The whole band of cons that they assemble for the ultimate sting on the big boss man played with incredible presence by Robert Shaw. I still flick my nose to be cool.
The Sting follows on nicely from Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, teaming together Redford, Newman and director George Roy Hill again offers up the same great feeling as the Butch. The group work so well together and the projects fit so perfectly to them a great story with a good twist and amazing sets made this feel like a true classic.
A very fun film. I watched this without expecting anything since I didn't even know what is was about but it turned out to be a great con movie that I would recommend to anyone for a watch.
Newman and Redford unite again with George Roy Hill in a film that worked just as well as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with a great twist that set the tone and standard for many caper movies to come such as the Ocean's series.
this film has got the best twist at the end of any film other than the usual suspects. i love the story and the acting. its a timeless classic, a must for all film fans
This is one of those films that puts a smile on my face and keeps me grinning all the way to the closing credits. George Roy Hill uses his amazing directing techniques to create a film that presents a very intricate and labyrinth-like con job, but never leaves the audience out of the loop. Redford, Newman and Shaw give memorable performances and create characters that have become a textbook reference for all con-men since. There is a wonderful and balanced mix of suspense, comedy, action and romance presented in this film; to truly get the most enjoyment out of this film, I recommend sitting down with friends unfamiliar with this film and watch how much they enjoy watching this film as you did the first time you saw it!
One of the all-time greatest films. Redford is good but this is pretty much Newman and Shaw's movie. The music is great, acting is fantastic, I really can't say enough about how much I love it.
