Plot: From director David Lynch comes a lyrical portrait of one man's real journey across America's Heartland. Filmed along the 260-mile route that the actual Alvin Straight traversed in 1994 from Laurens, ...( read more read more... )Iowa to Mt. Zion, Wisconsin, "the Straight story" chronicles Alvin's patient odyssey and those he meets along the way. When not rolling along at five miles an hour aboard his '66 John Deere, Alvin encounters a number of strangers, from a teenage runaway to a fellow World War II veteran. By sharing his life's earned wisdom with simple stories, Alvin has a profound impact on these characters that color his pilgrimage.

The film is so straightforward that the viewer does not need to exert so much mental effort to understand that the film is just very poignant - very human and so real - entirely in the opposite pole where the surrealistic films of Hollywood take charge.

I think this is David Lynch's best film to date. This is a touching tale about an elderly man who travels a great distance on his lawnmower to visit his poorly brother who he hasn't seen or spoken to for a long time. That's baically it but this film is enriched with believable characters and situations and some beautiful acting. Highly recommended.

The only weird thing David Lynch had left to do was make this movie, and it's amazing.

An old man sets out across the country riding his lawn mower, in order to visit a brother he hasn't seen in years. He's too old to legally and drive and doesn't have the money to pay for travel. The trip of only a matter of states will take him almost a year by mower, and he will meet a myriad of characters along the way.

Lynch's absurd and dark humor works gently here, but still rears it's head at the right moments (the woman who always hit's deer). Still though, it's worlds away from Eraser Head and Blue Velvet, but feels like an artist expanding his horizons, than trying to make a "traditional film". The movie has a unique perspective and natural beauty and earnestness, that's stirring and never sappy. It's a straight forward, emotionally engaging movie about the absurd, miraculous, and honest in life. Beautiful

Quite different from typical Lynch films as this one is rather simple and with brighter colour. Yet, some Lynch's trademarks like fine music score and long takes are still there. Its pace is very slow, but this doesn't imply it is boring. Alvin's adventure is a pursuit of lost memory, beautiful past and family love. Not Lynch's best, but an enlightening and unique piece.

This is a sweet story with some interesting characters. The pace is extremely slow to match the pace of the old man's trip on a lawn mower. It could have been so much better and unfortuantely seems to miss the chance to explore any thing in any depth. Nice views and interesting characters could add up to an off beat road movie, but unfortuately this misses the target.

Sincere, sweet tale illuminated by the late Richard Fransworth's Oscar-nominated performance. A real winner...

OMG, my friend just mentioned this movie and I couldn't remember the name. And here it is. I didn't know it was by David Lynch! Could it be more boring?

A very simple film about a simple man. Very quiet and very moving.

    Richard Farnsworth is perfect!

This film is completely different then anything Lynch has done before, but just as impressive. A kinder/gentler side of David Lynch.

One of David Lynch's most un-Lynchian work...it's baffling. This movie is the equivalent of Michael Bay making an actually intelligent movie. I know - really messes with the mind, right?

A departure from Lynch's usual surreal fare. A slow, but touching tale. The ending is subtle yet poignant. If you've ever had a falling out with a sibling, this is the film for you.

If you want proof that David Lynch is a brilliant filmmaker, forget "Blue Velvet", "Twin Peaks", "Eraserhead". THIS is the movie that showed me exactly how great an artist Lynch really is. That the man who came up with the cat-milking of "Dune" and the severed ear of "Blue Velvet" could make a wonderful G-rated movie about a senior citizen journeying across Iowa on a lawnmower. . .that, my friends, is true genius. This is so far from anything else Lynch has ever done that you kinda have to prepare yourself for the LACK of disturbing imagery. The late, great Richard Farnsworth is a delight to watch, and the slow, gentle nature of the story has made this not just one of my favorite David Lynch movies but one of my favorite movies period.

I'm rapidly becoming a big fan of David Lynch, first the elephant man which was an absolute master piece and now this, The straight Story is a family movie,I've never been a fan a family movies but I watched it for Lynch's sake and I was impressed the subtle but very deep story and script keeps you interested and leaves you touched, the acting was superb and I really enjoy Lynch's camera work thats why this movie is now one of my favorites.

Straight Story, à mon avis, parvient même à dépasser de peu The Elephant man. Wow.

I thought it was a very good movie. I loved how he stopped and talked to so many different people on his way to see his brother. My favorite though was the lady that kept hitting deer. I believe it was something like 13 deer in 7 weeks. Anyways, I just love the idea that he would go so far as to drive a small lawn mower all that way to see his brother whom he had not talked to in 10 years. Very good film.

it's a very touching story, involving real life people as it is based on a real event. richard farnsworth is absolutely marvelous as alvin. i must say i was quite surprised by how different it is to the other works of david lynch. but i still love this film and the other ones as well! it made me want to go over there and lay in some fields... until alvin would passed in front of me, then i would go meet him and give him a big hug.

first of all i am not going to rate this with 6 stars (yes 'tards i know it only goes to five... look up "wit") because dave lynch directed it. it is a heartwarming tale of an old mans journey physically from one side of the south to the other, and mentally towards rekindling his relationship with his long lost brother. it's nice to see the characters he encounters along the way. my favourite part of this movie was watching sissy spacek play her role as his daughter

This is not your typical David Lynch film. The average David Lynch fan will definately see and feel the elements that you know David Lynch puts into his work. But, it's nothing like the other Lynch films I have seen. But, it's still great. I really enjoyed the movie. when I first heard about this film I was thinking "Lynch and Walt Disney??" How does that happen?? But it works surprisingly and is actually a very very good film.

    More coming soon.....

This Is The best film i've ever seen.

    You really gotta watch it.

"There's no one knows your life better a brother that's near your age. He knows who you are and what you are better than anyone one earth. My brother and i said some unforgivable things the last time we met, but i'm trying to put that behind me. And this trip is a hard swallow of my pride. I just hope i'm not too late" -Alvin Straight
