Set in twentieth century Japan, the film quickly sets Sonny's character up as one of, if not the toughest, most brutal antihero in the history of cinema. After going to great lengths to rescue a guy from being executed, Sonny meets the brother and sister who hired him for the assignment, and then kills the guy and sells the girl into prostitution just because they didn't keep their word regarding his payment details! As the film deals with Sonny's moral - free monster of a character, there is no time in between the awesome fight sequences for emotion or fortune cookie wisdom spouting. Only once, when we learn about the fate of Sonny's father, is there any emotion directed towards his character. The rest of the time the film is reliant on Sonny's charisma to give it any depth past the fight scenes. Thankfully, Sonny has bucket loads of it but as this is a martial arts film it wouldn't really matter if he didn't. He is without a doubt one of the coolest Asian actors ever.

    Overall this is essential for any fans of Japanese chop socky cinema or martial arts in general. It has everything; an impossibly cool and tough lead, huge body count, swords, axes, guns, OTT blood spewing, people falling to their deaths, cars being tipped of bridges, a revenge subplot, people spitting out their teeth, gorgeous Japanese women and a guy being hit in the stomach so hard his last meal comes out his mouth! Oh and one of the coolest theme tunes in history.

    Great facial expressions and sound effects. Lots of bodily trauma. Flixter doesn't have a lot of Chiba's great movies here though, most shameful!

    He just kicks ass. The entire movie. If someone breathes, he runs up and kicks them through a wall. That makes this a great movie.

    Of the varied 1970's exploitation b-movies that I've seen, this one ranks pretty high on the badass scale- mainly because I saw the unrated version. Chiba turns in an amazing performance as Terry- an amoral violent tough guy you don't dare mess with. The dubbing, facial expressio...( read more)ns, and various noises/sound effects add to the cheesy goodness. I'm indebted to Tony Scott and Quentin Tarantino for introducing me to this movie. Check it out (the unrated version, that is)-it's a blast.

    OK, now after not being too interested in it, I'm told I MUST see it - so rating coming sometime today.

    Alright so it's an ok martial arts movie. People who are really into these movies say this is one of the best - ok, I believe you, I guess. I got to see the X-rated 90min. v...( read more)ersion, which is supposed to have been the first movie to ever get the rating due to violence. Chiba's onscreen presence is strong, and at least the story was multi-layered to keep you guessing where the 2 stories would interlace. In the end, it really is a good movie, just not one I'd clamor to see again simply becuase I'm just not into martial arts movies.

    This is where it was at! before Kung fu movies became about floating fifty meters in the air, slightly banging swords together and brooding about lost loves, Sonny Chiba was cracking head, gouging out eyes and taking names in the street fight trilogy.! This movie stars Sonny chib...( read more)a, one of the greatest martial arts actors to ever have lived, playing Terry Tsurugi, a half-japanese, half chinese Badass anti-hero trying to make a buck with his fists and gets in the middle of the yakuza and a man hell bent on killing him named Junjo. I could describe more about this film but that would be a waste of time. this film defies it's plotline, going to and fro, making it up as it goes along, it seems. yet that doesn't deter from this massive violent joy of joys. where terry gets into karate fights back to back to back and finishes them off in the most goring violent ways (one of the greatest moments ever on action cinema is a shot where Sonny punches a fool in the head, inwhich the movie cuts to an X-ray shot of the blow htting the skull.) if you are in any way a martial arts movie fan, you need to get this and watch it, twice! Thrice! maybe even tens times!!
