Plot:
Tailors are the secret-keepers of the power elite; customize fine apparel for the rich and powerful, and you'll hear things only whispered in the halls of government. Such is the sly conceit of The...( read more
), coadapted by John le Carré from his own novel, and directed by John Boorman with a delicious spin on the traditions of the spy genre. As British MI-6 agent Andy Osnard, Pierce Brosnan qualifies as James Bond's black-sheep sibling, viewing women only in terms of sexual conquest and conducting spy business by his own flexible set of rules. Banished to Panama to pay for recent indiscretions, Andy connects with Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush), a British ex-convict who's built a lucrative cover as tailor to Panama's highest officials. With the coveted Panama canal now under local control, Andy's arrived to see what Harry knows about the canal's pending multinational sale.
As Andy observes, Panama is "Casablanca without heroes," and that's precisely how Boorman depicts it: a melting pot of greed, ambition, and backroom maneuvering, where Andy can bed an embassy official (Catherine McCormack) while squeezing information from Harry, who concocts a phony "silent opposition" that puts British and American forces on full alert. Harry's wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) is pulled into the scenario by Andy's ruthless scheming, and The Tailor of Panama reveals how a simple fabrication can provoke trigger-happy forces around the globe. Part comedy and part political horror thriller--with a tragic supporting role for Brendan Gleason, from Boorman's The General--this is old-fashioned spy stuff made new by le Carré's inventive plotting and keen ear for the dialogue of rogues. --Jeff Shannon
The Tailor of Panama is bad movie. Geoffrey Rush doesn't seem to fit in the mild-mannered shoes of a Le Carre protagonist. The story is uncompelling. People mill about, having conversations, and generally just act very British and very espionage, but none of the characters is interesting enough to hold the story together. The movie also suffers from having a weak ending, where things start happening without making any sense at all.
I love Pierce Brosnan and this movie is an extension of his James Bond character. Defs worth a watch!
I rented this just to see Geoffrey Rush in another brilliant performance. Rush delivered, as did Brosnan. I thought it'd be a serious movie, but it was hilarious! Brosnan and Rush dancing in a gay club, bouncing up and down on a vibrating bed, all while planning a con worth millions of dollars. Brilliant.
somehow this is better than it should be. Brosnan and Rush work together even though it should be trie
Heheeee a pirate,James Bond and little Harry... Actually I liked the movie.Mainly because the action took place in Panama...I like that location
I was surprised by this adaptation of the novel, so much that it is now one of my favorite movies. Rush is uncomfortably spot on as the storytelling tailor, and Brosnan plays against all his spy characters as a true hedonist.
This is a movie that does not get enough credit for what it's worth. The plot's intising and the story's interesting. What really makes the movie is the cast. It's perfectly cast. Pierce is sexy and smart, Curtis lends a strong performance, and Rush is as brilliant as he always serves to be. Though dull at parts, in the end it's a great movie.
Honestly, the movie's pretty ordinary. Some people drive the point that it's a satire or dark humorist's take on the spy film, but it accomplishes nothing so clever. The only thing that deviates from the typical spy mold is the main character, played by Pierce Brosnan, in a fairly atypical way. The performances given are strong, and many of the characters have texture, but they feel squandered amidst a plot that is very unimportant.
The dialogue and writing have a lot of charm, but they do little to construct a plot or a sense of tension, which is what The Tailor of Panama is sorely missing. This low-budget spy flick is a noble experiment with admirable ambitions, but it missed the mark.
This film is getting almost no hype and no promotion. Again, it's very low key with no gunfire, car chases or blood. The politics of Panama are in the forefront with more than one reference to the 'Frankenstein' Noriega and how he was set him up by CIA Head, George the First, Bush that is. Ah hem.
this movie sucks it only tells the worst part of my country come nd visit it nd u will see is not like that
One of those movies that come along once in awhile where it just gets passed over - a real shame, because it was great.
Good stuff.
OK, OK, I admit it! I had to put this one in as one of my favourite actors plays a small part, and it was his first film, before moving on to greater things!!
We played this in Tulsa, and every man who left the theater was in tears. I'm always up for a movie that makes men cry.
A slick primer to the decidedly un-Bond like world of John Le Carre's spies. Boorman really knows how to ratchet up tension and the leads work very well off each other.
Up-date of "our Man in Havana" and succedes quite well. A film for those who prefer story over action
