A classic horror which became very influencial to its genre. I didn't give it a great rating because I didn't think it was that great. This being said, it's the first time I've actually been in physical pain while watching a movie! I was also truly scared throughout most of it. A good choice for Halloween movie nights.

Amust-see for all fans of the genre, Tobe Hopper's cult classic original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was part of a new wave of American horror films, and still holds it shock value 34 years (at time of writing) after it was first released. Chillingly atmospheric, this became a blueprint for a whole generation of filmmakers

You know - based on a true story can mean so much... this film is VERY loosely based on serial killer Ed Gein (no chainsaw, no creepy family...), but apparently Hollywood decided he wasn't evil enough for film - so they spiced up his "accomplishments" a bit; and voila! a horror masterpiece is created.

This is a nasty little movie. Among the nastiest I have ever seen. Strangely enough, there is very little in the way of gore. It's mostly implied. What you get are some of the most suspenseful scenes ever made. It's suspenseful because you know it's coming, but you have to wait for it. The movie is as effective as it is because, instead of the splatter-gore of the numerous ripoffs this film spawned, you get a remarkably well-filmed horror movie.

After an almost laughable first act that only serves to introduce the characters to the terror that awaits them, the film shifts gears to almost unbearable tension. The choice of shots, with every one from the point of view of an unseen voyeur, reminds one of the shots from Jaws from the point of view of what might be the shark. The difference between this and later imitations is that here, we don't know if anyone is really watching, while in the imitators it's always the bad guy watching. The ambiguity is everything. Also adding immeasurably to the film is the disturbing score by Hooper and Wayne Bell, which is not so much music as troubling rumblings that insinuate themselves into your head before you really notice them.

A van full of teenagers take an unwanted detour from a summer drive. They pick up a crazy hitchhiker (Edwin Neal) who amazes them with his ability to use knives on himself and others. They throw him out of the van. Stopping at a gas station that doesn't have any gas, they ask directions from the oddball man (Jim Siedow) running the place. He warns them not to venture out to one of their grandfather's houses, but they don't listen to him. Stupid. Turns out, they get to meet Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen). His appearance ushers in approximately 30 minutes of nearly unendurable sadism, as Leatherface and family torment and kill the travelers.

I can admire the skill that went into the making of this film. It is one of the great horror films of all time. I can't say I enjoyed watching it. I can't say I'd ever watch it again. It's so effective at being blunt about violence that it turns most audiences away, disgusted. However, it's a heck of a lot more honest than most horror films: it never, ever glamorizes violence. It knows that what it's showing is sick, not somehow cool.

The story behind the movie is almost as interesting as the movie itself. The ultra-low-budget production was filmed over several horrifying days in a 100 degree heat wave in Texas, because the actor playing Grandpa refused to have his makeup reapplied. Marilyn Burns, who plays the only survivor, was actually bleeding during some of the scenes, both from cutting her face on branches and from Hansen actually cutting her finger because their fake blood wasn't working. Edwin Neal said that "Filming [the dinner] scene was the worst time of my life... and I had been in Vietnam, with people trying to kill me, so I guess that shows how bad it was." The results are apparent onscreen.

A classic horror and it's amazing that this can still be quite scary and there is basically no gore. The lunatic/bad guy/killer isn't really the scariest in the world. When watching I felt a bit of suspense at the most. He's just too weird and you end up laughing at him

A Cult Classic!!!! The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a good horror movie and Leatherface is my favorite horror icon but I think I liked the remake.

I always wanted to watch thy movie because all the hype of how shoking, brutal and disgussting this movie was, but I´m a little dissapointed maybe this movie was shoking foe its time but now not.

This movie has some overacted performance and a good atmosphere with an interesting story, but the best thing of this movie was Leatherface, I love that psycho!!!! he´s creepy, silly and violent.

A worth of watch, a classic horror movie!!!

People don't respect the original. This is a chilling look into the live of a family of deranged cannibals who, by nature, brutally kill people and eat them.

I really thought this movie was going to be good. It just seemed like a low budget movie with no real action. It was filled with lots of chasing though. That got old fast.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the bloodiest and voilent movie of all time. the sotry for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is about a group of teenagers on the road in Texas stop off at the wrong farm and encounter a family gone awry. Once abattoir workers, the decay of the Southern rural economy has left them unemployed, and thedirectionless father and sons take to using their butchering skills on passing people. One by one, the kids encounter members of the grisly family. the leatherface character is one of the most scariest horror characters of all time and he is the scariest i have ever seen. this film is good and worth seeing if you like horror and if you don`t that mean you can get nightmares !!!

This movie could have been so much more frightening. All the gore is hidden, we only see blood and bones. It is creepy, but if we could actually see more of what was actually happening to the people, it would have been a lot better. Plus, it's very short and there's that part where you just focus on the girl's eyes, that was annoying. The only really scary part of the movie was the leatherface character.
