Anthony Perkins, Betsy Palmer, Henry Fonda

Anthony Mann made some of the greatest Westerns of the 1950s, all in partnership with James Stewart. Perhaps needing to prove himself as his own man, in 1957 Mann dropped out of Night Passage...( read more  read more... ) to do this film. It's a rather schematic character study about a lawman-turned-bounty-hunter (Henry Fonda) who undertakes the professional shaping-up of an effete young sheriff (Anthony Perkins) too tentative to police the streets of his town. Those streets are compositionally present right outside the oversize window of the office where Perkins undergoes a lot of his soul-searching and arguments with Fonda. That's typical of the film--scrupulously designed, yet abstract to the point of dramatic aridity. The VistaVision black-and-white of cameraman Loyal Griggs (Oscar®-winner for Shane) is at once stark and glossy. Fonda's own reclamation as a social being is accomplished by way of a not-very-interesting subplot involving Betsy Palmer and a half-breed child played by Michel Ray. --Richard T. Jameson

Fonda and Perkins work off of one another surprisingly well. Fonda is clearly the more comfortable western actor, but it actually works that Perkins seems out of genre since he is the one who must learn to fit the role of a wild west sheriff.

The dialogue, if it can actually

Not a bad movie. My guess is that the next bad guy to come to town after Fonda's exit kills Perkins.

Talky soul-searching western that works because of the chemistry of it's two stars, a grizzled Henry Fonda , and a distinctly non-Psycho-tic Anthony Perkins.

    Great offbeat western.

Great flix. Fonda as a Bounty Hunter and Perkins as a tenderfoot sheriff, and Fonda teaches Perkins how to be a smart, tough, and expirenced sheriff/gunfighter. I am really surprised this hasn't been remade.

Great western with another amazing performance from Henry Fonda. I am also getting to understand that Anthony Perkins was more than just the Norman Bates guy. He is solid in this film. Overall, love the way the film was made and enjoyed the pacing a lot. Simple, well crafted west...( read more)ern.

A very solid Western movie with two good performances from the main actors. I am a big fan of Anthony Perkins and after reading his book I really appreciated him as a person and not just an actor. You can see why he wasn't so popular and why Psycho and Norman Bates were always go...( read more)ing to be Anthony Perkins crown achievement.

He was more of a theater actor rather than an actor and you can tell from watching a couple of his movie that he always plays the shy boy/man even when he doesn't want to. I enjoyed his character here though, a new sheriff who has not been wearing the badge for too long. People not taking him serious until a bounty hunter (The late great Henry Fonda) shows up with a dead wanted man to collect his reward. He then stays around with a lady that has an half Indian son (which back then was a crime). The story is really good and Henry playing the mentor, teaching him how to stand for himself will always be a good story to watch, we see it in many movies and it's always interesting. Henry has a great presence on screen and i count him as one of the best actors that ever worked in Hollywood up there with James Stewart.

I'm not a big fan of westerns in general, but there are a few I appreciate that have a little more to them than just gunfighting and barfighting. "The Tin Star" is one of them. Henry Fonda and Anthony Perkins both give good performances as the aging bounty hunter and the temporar...( read more)y sheriff, respectively. The story is interesting and the script has humor, especially from Fonda. Overall, a good western.

Classic western starring Henry Fonda, as a bounty hunter that befriends a struggling young lawman

I especially like the scene where Tony Perkins figures out what it takes to be a sheriff in facing down a mob.
