The Untouchables Reviews and Ratings

One of the few movies I've actually liked Kevin Costner in. And I really liked Morricone's score.

    Very cool story!
    Moving when some heroes die.
Costner, Connery and De Niro r very good in it.
Interesting biopic of Al Capone and Eliott Ness, about the prohibition, in the 20's in Chicago.

love this movie, all the acotors are great
  • October 4, 2008
Uma obra-prima magnificente, principalmente em termos técnicos.

David Mamet's screenplay is far from the facts, but his cunning dialogues, along with De Palma's solid narration, both emerge in a thrilling, fun, larger than life clash between good and evil, adorned by an anachronistic but superb score by Il maestro Morricone.
Great appearance...( read more)s by Robert De Niro as Al Capone and Sean Connery as Jimmy Malone.
The vicious baseball bat scene and the train station suspenseful homage to 'battleship potemkin' stand out.

Despite an absolutely stunning cast and some great scenes, this movie failed to truly astonish me. The violence was very well done, especially the Mountie's scene. Costner's character only really convinced me in his final scene with Drago. The scene on the stairs seemed somewhat ...( read more)clichéd. The music wasn't all that good.
Having said all this, I'm currently watching it in bed, feeling terrible with a cough and cold. So I might not be in the right frame of mind. I'll watch it again someday but I can't see myself being in any rush.
  • September 27, 2008
A great insight into American life during Prohibition and Al Capone being in control
  • September 24, 2008
A great cast and script which makes for a great movie. The gun fights are gruesome and realistic and the acting is superb. This film has something for everyone.

Brian De Palma?s blood soaked (I love that description) depiction of Elliot Ness? crusade against Al Capone. I?m not sure this holds up remarkably well, it certainly looks cool but I don?t think its many elements really gel together. The story is nothing overly special, Sean Co...( read more)nnery is cool but he?s not stretching his abilities, his Oscar for this was clearly a lifetime achievement award. Robert De Niro didn?t really impress me much either, he?s done much better work elsewhere and he didn?t have much screen time anyway. There are some good scenes here, but they aren?t top of the line, for example De Palma would shoot a train station scene a few years later in Carlito?s Way that was 50 times better. It?s an enjoyable two hours and it?s always fun to see people shooting Tommy guns, but as far as gangster films go this is definitely second tier.

Good fun. "What are ye prepared to do...??!?" *coughs blood*
  • September 19, 2008
Enjoyable movie with great performances by Sean Connery and Kevin Costner (Andy Garcia was also bad ass too).

And I laughed during the scene at the train station because I remember the spoof from the Naked Gun movie. I didn't know where it came from when I first saw that movie.
  • September 19, 2008
Hey, it's a classic. Wonder why?
  • September 17, 2008
A great prohibition/Chicago mob movie from Brian DePalma. Sean Connery is a bad ass old tough streetcop. The violence is very effective, especially the baseball bat scene. The train station scene and Battleship Potemkin homage is great.

Capone: "I'm gonna tell you something. Somebody messes with me, I'm gonna mess with with him. Somebody steals from me, I'm gonna say you stole. Not talk to him for spitting on the sidewalk. Understand? Now, I have done nothing to harm these people but they are angered with me,...( read more) so what do they do, doctor up some income tax, for which they have no case. To speak to me like me, no, to harass a peaceful man. I pray to god if I ever had a grievance I'd have a little more self respect. One more thing, you have an all out prize fight, you wait until the fight is over, one guy is left standing. And that's how you know who won."

Kevin Costner stars as Ness, a federal agent who has come to Chicago during the Prohibition Era, when corruption in the local police department is rampant. His mission is to put crime lord Capone (Robert De Niro) out of business, but Capone is so powerful and popular that Ness is not taken seriously by the law or the press. One night, discouraged, he meets a veteran patrolman, Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), and discovers that the acerbic Irishman is the one honest man he's been seeking. Malone has soon helped Ness recruit a gunslinger rookie, George Stone (Andy Garcia), and, joined by nebbish accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith), the men doggedly pursue Capone and his illegal interests. At first a laughingstock, Ness soon has Capone outraged over his and Malone's sometimes law-bending tactics, and the vain mobster strikes back in vicious style. Ultimately, it is the most unexpected and minor of crimes, tax evasion, which proves Capone's undoing.

A pretty amazing film by Scarface director Brian De Palma. One of De Palma's best although I still consider his epic film Scarface as his best film ever but still, this film delivers all the goods when it comes to the gangster genre. I can't really say that it was excellent because the script to me seems lacking and sometimes it suffers from plot holes and a cheesy, over the top death scene. It was a good death (I won't mention who dies for the sake of spoilers) but it was cheesy. Good, in a cheesy kind of way.

Although, I think what made this film work was the superb acting by Class A Hollywood stars. You got Robert De Niro as Al Capone (the "baseball" scene is an instant favorite of mine), the guy never made a bad film according to my book. And in every film that he stars in, he gets better and better and better. De Niro is a method actor and The Untouchables just showed us how committed he really is to the job.

On the other side of the law, you got Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Andy Garcia, who all gave pretty impressive performances.

    4/5

A gangster story with a heart. One of my all-time favourites. I love the characters and the historical aspects.
  • September 15, 2008
I really loved this movie. There's a great chemistry between Connery and Costner, and De Niro's fantastic as Al Capone. I loved how DePalma kept you in suspense until the end, as you never knew who the Mob were going to whack next.

Kevin Costner became a star as the legendary "G-Man" Eliot Ness in THE UNTOUCHABLES, a slam-bang gangster saga with great direction by Brian De Palma, a witty David Mamet script and superb acting, including Robert De Niro as Al Capone and Sean Connery in charismatic supporting tu...( read more)rns. The film has virtually nothing in common with the famous 1950s TV series, and even less to do with real history, but it's a terrifically entertaining and exciting movie nonetheless. The story is almost totally fictionalized (Ness never killed Frank Nitti and had nothing to do with Capone's income-tax rap), but this becomes completely irrelevant in light of the beautifully crafted film's accomplishments, its an exhilarating, moving and larger-than-life cops vs. crooks epic.

this is really a very good movie...

The story of FBI agent Eliott Ness''s obsessive goal to bring down the notorious gangster Al Capone. This is a brutal masterpiece from director, Brian DePalma. The shoot-outs in this film were amazing as well as exciting to watch. It makes you wonder, who is going to win this shoot-out? One of the best gangster fims of the 1980's.
