I know, I know, it's campy and corny. Still, this one is a lot of fun. Plus, if you're a fan of the great stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen (like me) you'll enjoy the detail and the art form that all but died with the advent of CGI. The interaction between live action cowbo...( read more)ys and prehistoric dinosaurs is, in my opinion, some of Ray's best work.

It's painfully slow to get started, but it's a classic of sorts. I love the miniature horse the cowboys bring home, it's so cute! The stop-motion Harryhausen animation is exquisite. A real treat of a movie. The movie becomes a bit reminiscent of King Kong near the end, but it's ...( read more)done well.

Cowboys rounding up dinosaurs. It's one of a kind.

It might seem like a strange, cheesy idea to some people, but mixing dinosaurs with cowboys was a good move! Harryhausen did a great job of this one, especially with the Eohippus (the tiny, ancient horse at the start) and, of course, Gwangi (the title monster) himself. I would've...( read more) rated it a bit higher, but I have good reasons not to. First, they dubbed over Gina Golan's words. The film could've been better if they didn't. Then there's the dinosaurs: although they were animated well, there aren't quite enough of them. I would've liked to see at least twice as many as there were in this one. And last there's the elephant at the end. The dinosaurs had live action puppets for the actors to mess around with, so why was the elephant done ENTIRELY in stop motion?? It sounded a bit too squeaky for a real elephant as well. Apart from all this, Gwangi is a good classic film to have. It's become a bit of a rarity nowadays though, so if you want to get it, good luck finding it!
