The Virgin Suicides

James Woods, Josh Hartnett, Kathleen Turner, Scott Glenn, Kirsten Dunst

On the surface the Lisbons appear to be a healthy, successful 1970s family living in a middle-class Michigan suburb. Mr. Libson is a math teacher, his wife is a rigid religious mother of five attracti...( read more  read more... )ve teenage daughters who catch the eyes of the neighborhood boys. However, when 13-year-old Cecilia commits suicide, the family spirals downward into a creepy state of isolation and the remaining girls are quarantined from social interaction (particularly from the opposite sex) by their zealously protective mother. But the strategy backfires, their seclusion makes the girls even more intriguing to the obsessed boys who will go to absurd lengths for a taste of the forbidden fruit.

A good debut film from Sofia Coppola, I didn't care for the characters much but it was beautifully filmed.

I postponed seeing this because, for some reason, I thought it was just another 'chick-flick'. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Four stars (teetering on four and a half)

    ...and a great soundtrack!

Five daughters in a family, and the youngest commits suicide. The story of the family is told through the eyes of the neighbourhood boys - who don't quite understand what went on. Neither do we.

Not as good as it was hyped up to be, but still a great movie. An interesting look into what looks like a happy family, only to find that they're anything but. Kind of an American Beauty type movie.

The title pretty much gives away what happens, but it's still haunting to wa...( read more)tch everything that leads up to the suicides.

A very pretty film that's well shot with fine performances from Woods, Turner, and Dunst. I was kind of left with a "so what?" response to the ending...the movie seemed to focus on the fact that the girls' suicides were so puzzling without offering any real explanation into the ...( read more)matter. It was essentially - hey look at this shit - it's confused the hell out of us. What do you think?

Not a bad movie though - touching in a beautiful, strange way.

really weird and doesnt make much sense. it's pretty much about some obsessed boys lurking on the town slut. (i dont know why it's called virgin suicides in that sense, but whatever... just another example of how it makes no sense)

I'm starting to see a recurring theme to Sofia Coppola's films: The isolated and desperate alienation and boredom of very rich people. See Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette and this film. Is it possible poor Sophia feels isolated by her trust fund baby artistic privilege?

Strange movie.. I don't know what to think about it yet.. Kirsten was really good, Josh as well, I would like to had seen him more, he was just a small, though important, part in the movie.
The story is unique, it's beautiful, but the 4 suicides are too close to each other, it's ...( read more)unrealistic.
It's good, but not a masterpiece.

Great movie with an even better cast. Its a wired movie to watch because there is a pall over the whole movie because from the beginning you know where it is going to end up. Between this and Lost In Translation, I think that Sofia Coppola could become a great director.
