Talk about an explosive climax... I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that Tarentino watched this movie on repeat before he penned some of his films.

A turn of the century, end of an era look at the western, good stuff.

See this in letterbox. The pan and scan nearly kills the incredible opening sequence (which has beautifully designed titles). Some of the more symbolic moments feel heavy-handed (burning the ants), but overall this is an excellent film.

a calssic western without scenic backdrops and moral leasons
  • March 7, 2007
I was disappointed by this movie. I found it really really boring, Straw Dogs by Peckinpah is much better.

Sam Peckinpah did violent movies before people knew what violent movies were. Great, bloody, epic western classic.
  • February 26, 2007
    The best Western movie ever.
  • February 25, 2007
An excellent western from Peckinpah, altough I probably prefer the Ballad of Cable Hogue for reasons that are proably entirely sentimental.

great western , changed the way violent shoot outs were portrayed on screen

This classic western still stands the test of time. Not only is it violent, but it's actually quite funny in some parts. I even recognized a couple character actors who were in "Three Amigos" as well. One of the best westerns ever made.

Sykes: What are your plans, now?
Deke Thornton: Drift around down here. Try to stay out of jail.
Sykes: Well, me and the boys got some work to do. You want to come with us? It ain't like it used to be; but it'll do.

A western film about the end of the time for cowboys and outlaw...( read more)s.

Taking place during 1917, it's about a group of outlaws who are getting older and realizing that there time is passing. They are career criminals however, and that doesn't stop them. They rob banks and do not care who gets in the way if they have a problem. Civivlians including women are shot, trampled or used as a shield, because these guys do what they need to and don't give a damn about anyone else. Having been made at the same time, while Butch Cassidy is about the lighter side of the outlaw life, this is the more dramatic and real side to it.

There is also a subplot involving a former criminal paroled in exchange to capture these men.

Sam Peckinpah, who was mainly inspired by Kurosawa films, particularly Seven Samurai, is known for making bloody action movies, and this is no different. He also introduced Slo-Mo action to mainstream audiences, and is the one who inspired John Woo's style of filmmaking. There is a lot of influence from this film onto others, from the style of these criminals to the style of this feature.

The characters, particularly Holden, Borgnine, Ryan, and Oates do a good job as these outlaws, they are mean and to the point. The story is also well done. It doesn't give direct expository information. The dialogue is handled realistically. Even in scenes involving spanish, there are no subtitles, just expressions for the audience to understand and figure out.

Seeing as it is a western, the film is about setting pace and tone, leading up to it's big action scenes, and it works here, and is done well. The soundtrack is very good as well. A good movie about the end of times for these outlaws.

a technological marvel that retells one of the most superb stories ever used in all of fimmaking, peckinpah uses full potential of his actors and sets and blends them in a beautiful tragedy, a near-flawless effort

I can't say enough about this movie. A masterpiece from my favorite director; Sam Peckinpah. Who can forget the amazing ending? One shock and just when you're about to recover, another big shock. Regissör:Sam Peckinpah
    Musik: Jerry Fielding
Det vilda gänget utspelar sig 1913, altså i slutet av den så kallade Vilda västerntiden, en helt klart sevärd film.

possibly one of the greatest Westerns with director Peckinpah at his peak form. Considered ultra-violent for it's time (late 60's)

Excellent film, darkly funny, almost a more violent version of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" in some ways, The final walk is very powerful and the finale is breathtaking, truly recomended to fans of both Westerns and Hong Kong Director John Woo (A stylistic descendant of P...( read more)eckinpah)

Definitely DID NOT live up to my expectations. The film is a western about a wild bunch of cowboys that are hunted by Mexicans and angry townsfolk, and just isn't as good as most say. Remember the action scenes that are always highly praised? They are too quick and poorly edited...( read more) to even enjoy. Basically, it devolves into seeing the same Mexican get shot 300 times in a row. The film is also very poorly paced, with most bits dragging before when one of those almighty shootouts can come in and save the day. Let's not forget that the movie had SOME good bits, though. The characters were well rounded and the acting was fine. But that's not enough to save the film from "overrated" status.
