AAAHHH!! god i hated this when i was a child. I was terrified of the witch's monkeys (I think) and those freaky little chipmumnks. But I did like the broadway musical Wicked which was based on this. If you liked this check it out.
You just...cannot beat this movie, it's such a classic, and a little metal too when you find one of the first mainstream examples of snuff in the forest of death or whatever. :D
Watching this movie when you're a kid its like "What a wonderful movie" but watching it as a older person, you start realizing that this movie is fucking crazy.
The classic story of Dorothy, taken in a tornado to the land of Oz, where the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Lion befriend her, on a magical quest to follow a yellow road to see a wizard. Thinly vieled riff on the 1938 elections, actually, with the tin man being the industry leader and the cowardly lion being the partythat backed down until it found heart, and the scarecrow being the incombant administration. It was the Great Depression. They had to vent somehow.

14 year old girl Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) lives with Aunt Em (Clara Blandick), Uncle Henry (Charley Grapewin), simple-minded Hunk (Ray Bolger), blustery-but-timid Zeke (Bert Lahr), & would-be engineer Hickory (Jack Haley). Dorothy encounters Professor Marvel (Frank Morgan). Dorothy is discover the house has been caught up in the twister the bedroom window when she sees several people fly by, including Miss Elmira Gulch (Margaret Hamilton) transforms into a frightening witch. Dorothy finds a magical fantasyland in a village & parkland of unearthly beauty. Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (Billie Burke) informs Dorothy is in Munchkinland has killed the ruby-slippered Wicked Witch of the East (Margaret Hamilton) by "dropping a house" on her. Glinda transfers the powerful ruby slippers from the dead witch onto Dorothy's feet. The dead Wicked Witch of the East''s sister:the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) appears in a blaze of fire & smoke in Munchkinland. Glinda advises Dorothy seeks to help from mysterious Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City in her quest to return home to Kansas by following the yellow brick road & never remove the ruby slippers.
Dorothy & Toto on the journey where she befriends Scarecrow with no brain (Ray Bolger), Tin Man with no heart (Jack Haley), & Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) decide to accompany Dorothy to the Wizard (Frank Morgan) @ the Emerald City.
The eternal film about how you really can go home again. Yet I maintain that Dorothy was crazy for wanting to go back to dreary old Kansas. I much rather would have stayed in Oz. I could have hung out with a sissy lion, a gay tin woodsman, and a scarecrow that's more awkward and gangly than I am. Plus all of the bright colors and opportunities to burst out into song and dance just seem too fabulous to pass up. It's a near perfect family film. Near perfect? Ok, it's a perfect film on every conceivable front. Judy Garland was magical as Dorothy. Everything that made Garland a huge star was in this film -- her ability to act, dance, and sing, both separately and at the same time. "Over the Rainbow" is a blissful marriage of lyric, music, and performer. Try to imagine anyone else performing that song with as much gusto, honesty, and beauty as Garland. You shall fail, I promise you. Much like The Adventures of Robin Hood, the artificiality of the sets is very obvious, but it adds to the magic of film. Sometimes actual paintings and sets contain more visual power than that which all of the technological wonderment try to create.
I've always loved this movie, and after playing the title role, I feel an even closer connection. fantasy, musical, comedy, and vividly colorful spectacle. not a huge fan of Judy Garland, but I can set aside my objections for this one. a thoroughly enjoyable and influential film. (and yes, the Dark Side of the Moon trick does work)
This movie has always creeped the hell out of me. Be it the camera angles or the subtext, there's an odd aura about this film I can't shake. It's not even the flying monkeys that make it creepy, just everything else.
the autor of this story also published editorials in south dakota newspapers, calling for the extinction of all native americans... that leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
the Wizard of Oz is a cultural classic, the story line in unique and the acting is good (besides the fact that 17yr old Judy Garland plays 8yr old Dorthy)
