After receiving top honors at the Venice Film Festival, Darren Aronofsky's latest has continued to enjoy raves trickling down from the Toronto Film Festival and elsewhere. Mickey Rourke is a great actor and this is being hailed as his best performance. Oscar nominations for him, and maybe for the film, seem possible.

There are many things about The Wrestler that are brilliant. It's been a hell of a couple years for Mickey Rourke. I wasn't a huge fan of Sin City, but he was undeniably good in it. His performance in The Wrestler is nothing short of astonishing; not only can he act, but he's excellent here. He's completely believable as a man stuck in the his glory days of the 80s, and he even looks the part physically. Battered, worn, but still stong.

Thomei is great as Randy's love interest although her story is obviously overshadowed by his. Evan Rachel Wood also puts in a strong and emotionally wrenching performance as Randy's estranged daughter. Everyone in the movie is playing second fiddle to the performance that Rourke puts on, though; he's really that good here.

You don't have to be a fan of wrestling to enjoy The Wrestler, although wrestling fans may get a kick out of some of the scenes. It's not really about wrestling. It's also a really great movie, and one of the best films that I saw at TIFF '08. Highly recommended.

Fantastic performance by Rourke. Great low-key directing by Aronofsky. A great character piece all in all.

This was a very powerful movie.
We already know that Aronofsky can craft a good film and this just further proves it. It's also more straightforward than is previous efforts but that's not exactly a bad thing (nor is it a knock against his other movies).

And Mickey Rourke? Holy shit he's amazing in this movie. His performance was incredibly moving, he really managed to make the character likable and relatable.

Amazing!! Powerful and well-made. I don't even have to write an extremely long review, because all I can say is that people should go and watch this movie. Mickey Rourke is brilliant.

Watching The Wrestler was something special. Never have I seen an actor pour his entire heart and soul into a performance the way Mickey Rourke has as Randy "The Ram" Robinson. He can be brilliantly funny, scary and heartbreaking all at the same time and its simply second only to Daniel Day Lewis in TWBB as the great lead performance of the 21st century.
Now usually a performance like this tends to overshadow everything else about the film but The Wrestler directed by always adventurous and very consistent Darren Aronofsky doesn't seem to have this problem. Everything from the excellent supporting cast of Marisa Tomei and Even Rachel Wood, the always stunning cinematography of an Aronofsky film, the score and the haunting songs from Bruce Springteen make The Wrestler his most mature and complete masterpiece yet.

I know that it's the coming back of Mickey Rourke, I know that it's visually well done, but I didn't like it, it didn't touched me and I can't see Evan Rachel Wood with that dark hair! I can't understand why it won in Venice.

This should be the first GOOD wrestling movie. Nicolas Cage woosed out after seeing what he'd have to do in the ring so Mickey Rourke was brought in (Marv from Sin City) he looks the part, a washed up version of Triple H.
