Opulent romantic drama set during the 1830s about Queen Victoria, her accession to the throne and her relationship with Prince Albert. The machinations of the court of England are captured in all their back-stabbing glory. We as the audience get an intimate look behind the scen...( read more)es. Emily Blunt has a commanding presence as the youthful ruler that draws you into her world. She's matched by a first rate cast that support her skillfully, particularly Rupert Friend as her suitor. Their chemistry is a romance of the highest order. Music, costumes, and sets are transcendent in recreating the look of the period, perfectly complementing the action. Stately and well crafted, but never fussy. This biography has life.

I adored it. It was pretty to look at, fascinating, and HUGELY romantic.

'Tighten your corsets, it's time for assembly-line historical drama!

The latest from Jean-Marc Vallée is "The Young Victoria", a look at the rise of, well, Queen Victoria. Written by Julian Fellowes, who penned "Gosford Park", the film's emotional center is that of the relations...( read more)hip between Victoria and her eventual husband, Prince Albert (Rupert Friend). But beyond the passionless romance is a film about the chess match of royal politics - as the film begins, Victoria's mother (Miranda Richardson) and her dastardly adviser (Mark Strong) plot how to manipulate the supposedly impressionable young woman once she takes the throne.

Emily Blunt is certainly more than a capable actress. Her role as the snarky assistant in "The Devil Wears Prada" was, other than Meryl Streep, undoubtedly the best thing that movie had going for it, and as an independent, similarly bitter woman in "Sunshine Cleaning", she also excelled. She doesn't feel quite right for this part, however. She seems almost too biting, too self-confident to fit the role of a woman still coming into her own. And Blunt can't rid herself of a fiery, disparaging grin that gives the elegant queen-to-be a bit too much of a sassy edge. This was, after all, the woman responsible for delivering a quote which has now become a beloved internet meme: "we are not amused".

"The Young Victoria" is the sort of film that gives this particular genre a bad name - it's everything that the Merchant & Ivory films are accused of being. The period detail is impeccable, from the costuming to the set design, but it feels so committed to it's manners that it rarely comes to life. It's ironic, then, that it can't commit to anything else - it muddles itself genre-jumping between elements of romantic drama and political thriller. It's unsure of itself, incapable of finding a focus.

There have been a handful of recent period efforts that have successfully brought history to life with rich, passionate romance as the central focus - films like "Pride & Prejudice", "Bright Star", or even "The Duchess" - but "The Young Victoria" simply feels ancient.

A thoroughly excellent dramatisation of our longest ever ruler. Stunning locations and some great casting makes this one of the better period dramas out there. Just brilliant.

An intimate, small-scale story of a young woman's struggle to be independent of her scheming relations and to find equality in a very unequal marriage. full review

I didn't quite believe that this tiny girl could become the most powerful woman in the history of the world, but at the time perhaps no one believed it. full review

Watching the slow, cautious courtship between Victoria and Albert is so pleasurable, so surprisingly not-boring, that it doesn't matter how much of the ending we already know. full review

Blunt, her eyes sparking, her manner playful, smart, and proud, shines in the title role. If the film itself isn't brilliant, its star most definitely is. full review
