Eddie Bracken, Betty Hutton, Diana Lynn

During World War II, Hollywood's patriotic duty was to shoot stirring dramas and good-hearted comedies that celebrated America's brave soldiers and honored their loyal, virtuous wives and girlfriends....( read more  read more... ) Which goes a long way toward explaining why this delirious Preston Sturges farce, filmed in 1943 at the height of the war effort (and of its director's powers), was delayed for a year while Paramount executives wrestled with Sturges's irreverence: in Morgan's Creek, the writer-director tweaked those stereotypes with his tale of Trudy Kockenlocker, a small-town girl who only wants to send our boys off with a smile. That she does, but she wakes up after an all-night party with vague memories of a dubious wedding and soon finds herself pregnant.

Trudy, played by the ebullient Betty Hutton, is wholesome, sexy, and something of a ditz, in contrast to Sturges's usual savvy heroines (represented instead by Trudy's teenaged younger sister, played by Diana Lynn). Trudy's savior is would-be boyfriend Norval, played to apoplectic perfection by the rubber-faced Eddie Bracken, who was never better than in this wide-eyed, pratfall-happy performance as the weary but loyal draft reject who stands by his girl. As Trudy's father, Sturges regular William Demarest likewise achieves a series of comic peaks as the exasperated and increasingly desperate Officer Kockenlocker.

Like Sturges's other Bracken-Demarest vehicle, the equally fine Hail, the Conquering Hero, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek was unique among wartime movies for its satirical sting and unblinking eye for hypocrisy on the home front. It's also enormous fun, a comedic romp that epitomizes Sturges's kinetic, high-speed style. --Sam Sutherland

A daring, ahead of its time gem that thinly veils premarital sex and illegitimate pregnancy with a phantom marriage and bust-a-gut humor. A milestone in American comedy and a covert triumph for director Preston Sturges.

*Note: Betty Hutton is simply fantastic!

Despite Preston Sturges being such a renowned slap stick comedy director he manages to make these films about much more than the laughs. This movie from 1944 is a perfect example. When Trudy Kockenlocker (Betty Hutton) finds herself 'married' and with child after an accidental ...( read more)souse filled evening at a military dance she tries everything to make things right. Betty Hutton is precious and Eddie Bracken is a hilarious addition as her beua and potential savior. This a great before its time political comedy that every film lover should see.

Absolute absurd zaniness and I love it. Another gem from Sturges. Sadly the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long and Sturges career ended shortly after the war. Still, even his lesser efforts like this one is well worth checking out.

Brilliantly funny, subversive slapstick with a great cast and surprisingly naughty undertone. Rent it with "knocked UP" and see which one you'll remember more. My money is on this classic.

This is just silly and delishous war time comedy starrng Betty Hutton as "Trudy Kockenlocker" who finds herself in a rather delicate condition after partying all night at a "Kiss the boys goodbye" dance. Eddie Bracken is the unsuspecting bumbling lovable hero and William Demeres...( read more)t (Uncle Charlie of My 3 Sons) plays her widower father and town cop. Perfect example of movies of this era and an enjoyable one at that.
