This Christmas reminded me a lot of Soul Food, only with singing.
It's the story of Christmas time with the Whitfield family. All the family issues and drama that make the Holidays what they are. It was a cute story, I enjoyed it.
I have liked Loretta Devine since Waiting To Ex...( read more)hale, so I was happy to see her as MaDere. I also really like Regina King, she is a great actress. She was perfect as Lisa. When she sprayed the bathroom floor with baby oil, so her lying cheating husband would fall, and then whipped him with his own belt, I thought I was going to pee my pants. I was literally laughing out loud at that. That was great.
Chris Brown has a great voice, so I was happy to hear him sing. I was pleased to hear him sing " Try a little tenderness", in this film. I think Otis Redding is amazing, and that is by far my favorite of his songs.
This Christmas is a feel good Christmas movie. It even makes the chaos and dysfunction of family life seem normal.

It's the Christmas season for the Whitfields: a time for joy, family, and endless problems. For Ma'Dere (Loretta Devine), her relationship with Joe (Delroy Lindo) remains a secret shame she tries to keep away from her troubled son Quentin (Idris Elba); Lisa (Regina King) is deali...( read more)ng with a cheating spouse; Kelli (Sharon Leal) is looking for a man, hoping a one-night-stand will lead to love; Baby (Chris Brown), the youngest of the clan, has aspirations to be a singer; and Claude (Columbus Short) is a military officer on leave with secrets that will come back to haunt him. This Christmas is best when it settles into the family dynamic. The cast plays off each other extremely well, selling the history of the Whitfields without overcooking the sibling rivalry bitterness. This Christmas is blessed with copious amounts of charm and spirit, if not story. It's an experience defined by the strength of the cast, who rise above the derivative nature of the picture to fashion something if not entirely fresh, at least it's entertaining and uplifting where it counts. The result is a big, gushy, emotional, secret-driven, family-obsessive casserole, perhaps facile in some of its resolutions, but so full of good heart and love.

Thoroughly familiar w/o restricting its genial appeal to any one demographic.

Nigel Andrews, The Financial Times

A strong wire netting will keep out unwanted super-soaps such as the first, in which a black family in LA proves that being Afro-American is no inoculation against outbreaks of schmaltz and piety. full review

Claudia Puig, USA Today

There is a familiar quality to the multi-generational family holiday homecoming that nicely blends drama and comedy. It's a cut above the standard heartwarming fare that fills theaters this time of year. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

What's surprising is how well Whitmore, the director, manages to direct traffic... It's sort of a screwball-comedy effect, but with a heart. full review

Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

A holiday melodrama suffering from severe bloat. full review

Chris Brown's performance is the saving grace in this movie that is fueled by an ensemble cast featuring Regina King,Sharon Leal,Delroy Lindo, and Loretta Devine.

Seeing him do a twist on a classic Otis Redding tune is worth the price of admission.
