  This is a very unique and very funny buddy comedy. It is a great idea for a comedy and the the entire cast puts on a very funny performance, particularly Franco. This is one of the better comedies to come out in a while.

  This is the End is too scatter-shot and vulgar to capture a wide audience despite some hilarious parodies and homages to films that all of the actors have been a part of. Unfortunately, the movie drags on too long and overstays its welcome. At the beginning when you are first getting used to the characters and story it can be pretty funny and entertaining, but after about half way I just found them somewhat annoying and cumbersome to listen to. There are some excellent performances from people like Michael Cera and Emma Watson that are truly funny, but the main actors just go too far for me. The whole film has this old school B movie vibe to it that does work though. From the special effects to the plot, there's plenty of old school horror movie charm. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more to the story than just a small group of guys hanging out in a house the whole time. I was hoping they would go out and adventure a little more to spice things up at some point, but they never do. The marketing campaign fooled me on this aspect of the film. The movie never lost my interest despite all of this because it is so unpredictable thanks to the complete ridiculousness that is the entire production. It's certainly a unique project that got me to laugh a few times, but I don't think everyone will like it and some will even hate its aimlessness & vulgarity.

  A consistently entertaining and funny film concerning a party at James Franco's house that goes to Hell after the apocalypse happens, and how Franco and his friends (Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride) struggle to survive in its aftermath. The funniest movie since "Superbad" rarely disappoints, even if its story could use a little fleshing out and the ending seems random and stupid, but for the most part this is a hilarious, side-splitting movie that consistently makes you laugh hard. Look out for a coked-out Michael Cera, who steals ever scene he is in. A movie that you will definitely want to watch and re-watch multiple times.

  There are three apocalyptic comedies this year and Seth Rogen's This Is The End is undoubtedly the biggest in profile. The plot is simple: Rogen and his pals, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride, are holed up in James Franco's lavish home while the world comes to an end outside. Your enjoyment level for this movie will largely depend on your enjoyment level of the cast since they are playing self-involved, idiotic versions of themselves. While it dithers with the occasional self-indulgent sidetrack, I found Rogen to be savvy about providing enough for an audience to invest in. There's a slew of Entourage-style cameos, though mostly pre-apocalypse, to ease us into the film. It's fun seeing Michael Cera and Emma Watson (Perks of Being a Wallflower) play against type, but there's so many blink-and-you'll-miss-them figures that it can be tiring. But once it rains fire, demons emerge, and the righteous are Raptured, the movie gets outlandish and even better. For a solid hour it's a survival tale where egotistical actors are at one another's throats and it genuinely gets funnier as it goes. The comedy is, as you would expect, completely vulgar but hilarious often enough. A shouting match between Franco and McBride over masturbation habits, complete with angry, enthusiastic miming, is a thing of comic glory. I was not prepared for how well Rogen and his collaborator Evan Goldberg (they wrote and directed the movie) are able to handle suspense, special effects, and a climax that is equal parts silly and heartwarming. There is a rewarding payoff to a character arc amidst all the talk about penises, human and satanic, and cannibalism, and that's saying something. I only wish the ending had more punch, settling for an extended and mostly lame pop-culture cameo that seem to sap the good times. Still, if you had to spend the apocalypse with a bunch of guys, you could do worse. Nate's Grade: B

  Danny McBride: Seth, that's some of the best acting I've seen you do in the past 10 years. Where the fuck was that in Green Hornet? This is the End was far better than I could have ever imagined. If you're a fan of this brand of comedy(Superbad, Pineapple Express), then this is a can't miss. I loved the set up and once the End begins, it works just as well. I don't think a minute would go by throughout the whole film where the audience wasn't in an uproar, and that's all you can really ask for from a comedy; to make us laugh. The movie begins with Jay Baruchel showing up in LA to hangout with his friend, Seth Rogen. The two hang out for awhile and then Seth talks Jay into going to James Franco's housewarming party. Once they arrive there, they begin partying and it's all going well. Then Jay and Seth go to the gas station and the "End" begins. They quickly go back to the party and end up sticking out the "End" with fellow friends, James Franco, Craig T. Robinson, Jonah Hill, and Danny McBride. Other notable cameos include but aren't limited to Jason Segal, Paul Rudd, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kevin Hart, Aziz Ansari, and last, but certainly not least, Emma Watson. The premise for this just opens up so many doors for great comedy. I can see Seth Rogen and fellow writers just having an amazing time writing this one, and it shows, because every single actor looks as if they are having the most fun of their careers. It's such a simple idea; let's just be ourselves, party, and then introduce the end of the world. Simple, but genius. This isn't just another raunchy comedy looking to make a buck. Sure it's raunchy and it's a comedy, and I'm sure it will make more than a buck, but it really was a pleasure to watch all these comedic actors running around having the time of their lives. I loved every single second of it and it's for sure a film you won't want to miss. Some scenes may leave the prude out to dry, but for everyone that loves the shocking, gross out dialogue of other films of this ilk; you're in for one hell of a fun time.

  Stoner movie, slacker comedy, the arrested development of grown men in their 30s. It's a tradition that perhaps started in 1978 with National Lampoon's Animal House and has continued with last year's Ted. This is the End compares favorably with those works. No this isn't highbrow stuff. Admittedly, it can be puerile and jejune at times. All the soporific humor gets a bit excessive. And the running time could use the benefits of an editor. It drags for about 20 minutes before the final act (which is thankfully inspired). But the overall theme promotes a redemptive heart. After all, these people were forsaken when the faithful were being taken up into heaven during the rapture. There's brilliance in its simple truths. For example - James Franco attempting to explain the mystery of the Holy Trinity to his confused friend. "It's like Neapolitan ice cream." More often than not this riff on the end of the world is a funny, and even insightful, sketch comedy.   This Is The End might be a vanity project, but it's a gloriously ridiculous, wild, and hilarious romp. Playing highly fictionalized and exaggerated versions of themselves, the film follows Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen who attend a star studded housewarming party at James Franco's new house. Things start off well enough, but quickly spiral out of control as, all of a sudden, a series of apocalyptic events begin ravaging Los Angeles. In the wake of the catastrophic events, the survivors (Rogen, Franco, Baruchel, Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, and Craig Robinson) barricade themselves inside Franco's pad to make sense of what's going on. Based off a short film, this is a highly unique, and tremendous film. It pokes fun at blockbuster disaster films, show business, and all of the performers and their careers. It is a comedy, but it's also rather horrific and intense at times, too, with some legitimately gripping and startling set pieces and moments. For a high concept shock comedy, the film also has a lot of heart, focusing on/spoofing themes like friendship, survivalsm, faith, and human behavior in the wake of distressing situations. There's all sorts of surprises, and some really amazingly over the top shenanigans...none of which I will spoil. The cast do a great job, but then again, they are basically playing themselves. They're all pretty close friends, and you can tell they really love one another and work well together. It's also fun how the film really blurs the line between reality and fiction at times. Aside from some of the more fantastical elements, this feels like a documentary at times, and comes off as genuine and not just a cute wink to the audience. The dialogue is pretty realistic for the characters and situations, and is typical of what we've come to expect from them. There's some great lines, but my favorite is easily one where Franco compares the Holy Trinity to Neapolitan ice cream. I really liked this, and, as good as it is, there are some faults. For one, the tone is rather uneven at times, and sometimes the mix of comedy and more serious elements don't always blend. The effects are likewise all over the place, sometimes looking great, and sometimes looking rather sloppy. There's tons of jokes, and, for the first 30-40 minutes, the humor is consistent. The middle portion of the film is hit and miss at times, with some stuff going on far longer than necessary, but the last portion picks up and gets more consistent again. Sometimes the film gets pretty extreme, but only once or twice did I see this as a bad thing. I was rather surprised at how intense and gruesome it gets at times, especially when it actually works and is really effective. Not often does this happen in these types of movies, and rarely does it come up in the comedy genre. Bottom line: how you feel about any of these guys and their previous works will determine your enjoyment of this. If you like hanging out with these guys as much as they like hanging out with each other, then you'll definitely have a good time probably. It's ludicrous, crude, and offensive, but also good natured, smart, and friggin funny.

  I LOVED IT! One word to describe the film would be "brilliant". When was the last time we have seen a comedy this good? Answer: a long time. I needed this especially after watching The Internship, and after all of the poorly made comedy films the past few years. The most unique thing about this movie is that all of the characters play THEMSELVES! When have you seen that before? Answer: We haven't. For that cool reason alone, and along with all of the punchlines and mayhem....This Is the End is a huge win!

  "This is the End" is the funniest movie in a long time, though that's not really a surprise given the tried and true cast and untraditional premise. Indeed, this is an ambitious movie, packed with cameos, references, and in-jokes, and you get the feeling that the whole cast and crew had an insanely fun time making the movie, and the audience is just lucky enough to be let in on the experience. It's a weird movie, and it becomes clear near the end that they really weren't in it to make any big statements or explore the real-life lives of actors/comedians (though they do take some stabs at that). The goal here was clearly to make a movie that concentrates the best elements of "Pineapple Express" (in my opinion one of the best comedies of the last few decades -- yes, decades) and then raise those familiar wacky antics to the most extreme, over-the-top levels. While it largely accomplishes its goals, the fact that most of the movie takes place in one dimly lit and surprisingly uninteresting location (they could easily have made Franco's house far more flamboyant), the freshness of the plot begins to waver. All this crazy stuff is supposedly happening outside, yet we're stuck inside until close to the end. It's a shame that there was never a moment where "This is the End" made we feel that they really were taking full advantage of their ideas, but it doesn't really matter, because an evening watching these guys hanging out is still always a good time.

  Where do I begin? Is this the end of their careers, nope! This is so far from that it;s not even funny. I laughed my ass off during my viewing of this film, but I do feel like something was missing once the second act of the film took off. The set-up is genius and the conclusion is absolutely comedic gold, but the jokes focussed mainly on penis gags in order to get to the end of the picture. There are fantastic cameos throughout the film, the cast is perfect just doing what they love to do as themselves, and the "script" is pretty well written, and when I say script I mean that the improve was breathtaking. I have seen better films from this cast in the past, in fact I think this is one of the weaker attempts, yet still one of the cleverest if that makes sense. In the end, "This is the End" let me down a bit, but I still had a great time watching it!

  Craig Robinson: We're actors! We pretend to be hard, but really, we're soft as baby s**t! The apocalypse has been quite a popular topic for film in recent years. It has also been handled in various forms; from disaster drama (2012, Knowing), to the various zombie films (the upcoming World War Z), to romantic dramas (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, a film I will continue to go to bat for). Even the provocative, avant-garde filmmaker Lars von Trier took a stab at the end of the world with Melancholia. So with the end of the world as such a popular subject for film, why not see it as a broad studio comedy? This Is The End is a wild joke-fest about the world coming to an end, as well as something akin to The Avengers of comedies, given that it stars many comedic actors all playing versions of themselves in a weird sorta-pseudo-sequel to every Judd Apatow-produced comedy, even though he had nothing to do with this film.   This plays out like an elongated Funny or Die skit. The only difference being that "This Is the End" is consistently funny. The writing team that brought you "Superbad", Seth Rogen and the very hit and miss Evan Goldberg, come together once again to write and direct this film. Adapted from a 2007 short by Goldberg, Rogen and Baruchel entitled Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse, "This Is the End" has one of the most simplistically brilliant plotlines in film history. Basically, Rogen, Baruchel and every other comedic actor you can think of (all playing themselves) attend a party at James Franco's house...and then the world ends. There is actually a subplot dealing with Rogan and Baruchel growing apart as friends which works really well (in "Superbad"-esque fashion) only because of the construction of the script and some rather genuine chemistry from its two leads. And can I take a minute to talk about how well this film looks for being both Rogen and Goldberg's directorial debuts? I mean, aside from the onslaught of funny one-liners, this end-of-days film looks like a million bucks (in a good way). Even when some of the CGI does slip into a cartoonish realm, like seasoned vets, Rogen and Goldberg maintain the tonal atmosphere befitting each scene; be it a high octane chase sequence or a few well placed dance sequences. Side Note: When I say everybody is in this movie, I do mean EVERYBODY. But the cameo that clearly steals the show is from Michael Cera in his most outlandishly crass and hilarious role ever; a performance that is almost worth the price of admission alone. Trust me. If you weren't a Cera fan before, which is supremely understandable with him being the most annoying kind of Canadian and all, then you will be after this. "This Is the End" is what every person paying $11 for their movie ticket should expect, but rarely gets from a modern comedy. It's not only an adult comedy that actually contains non-stop laughs for a change, but "This Is the End" is the funniest movie since "40 Year Old Virgin". This also is a much needed return to comedic form for Rogan and to a lesser extent Jonah Hill (only because "21 Jump Street" was pretty funny) and clearly is the funniest movie the rest of this cast has been a part of by far. Hell, even Danny McBride is hilarious here. And we all know how much I hate Danny McBride. Final Thought: There are so many memorable one-liners in this movie, it is sure to become an instant comedy classic. And why most of these jokes work is because they are so self-deprecating. Yes, THIS IS about 20 minutes too long and it is essentially a movie full of phallic and weed tangents, but when it comes right down to it "This Is the End" is a comedy which contains very few bits that don't work (mostly coming near the end) and is drowned in laugh out loud moments from minute one, to a finale that blows the one in "Bridesmaids" right out of the water. I hate to constantly pick on "Bridesmaids" (well, hate is such a strong word) but Kristen Wiig and crew should really take note on how a real comedy like "This Is the End" constructs a final sequence.   'This Is the End' is, by far, the funniest movie of 2013. The humor may be immature, but Seth Rogen is to immature jokes, what Shakespeare was to tragedy. This may not be the best Rogen/Goldberg flick of all time, but it will have you laughing from start to finish. Grade: B+

  I love Seth Rogan movies. From "40 Year Old Virgin" and everything since, I've been a huge fan. When I first saw the teaser for this I was super pumped. Went to a late night, mid week screening, and I gotta say, I LOVED it. This is by far the funniest movie since "Ted", and it's funnier than that. Here, Rogan(also director and writer), James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, and Jay Baruchel(all playing themselves) encounter the apocalypse. They are all at a party at Franco's house when things go down. People get sucked into the sky, theirs a huge sinkhole, fire every where, it's pretty awesome. Everyone but them dies and they have to fend for themselves. From there they drink pee, jerk off, make a sequel to "Pineapple Express" among many other hilarious things. I laughed the entire time, even at scenes I already saw in the previews. All the performances are great, as they are exactly what you would want/expect from these actors. Seeing these guys all together again in a movie is just fantastic. Also, this has some great cameos that will leave you like "how in the world did they get them to do that?!" Oh and Michael Cera steals the movie for the 5 minutes he is in this. "This is the End" is full of great one liners, and scenes that I'm sure I'll be quoting and joking about for years to come, much like "Superbad". So far this year has had some bad comedies and some that were just ok, this is by far the best. If you want to have a great time at the theater and laugh your butt off for 2 hours then you should head out and watch this.

  I loved every moment of the ride. I don't normally use this term, but it was pretty "EPIC". I laughed many, many times and loved all the actors in here. Even the ones I hated (in the movie). I saw a screening of it, but would totally pay money to see it again. It takes you on this amazing trip of friendship, raunchy man-humor, comedy, end of the world type of stuff. It's so out of control, that I almost forgot if I was watching a scary movie or comedy, but it worlked well together. Highly recommend it if you have a sense of humor and aren't offende easily. :)

  The film is crude, excessively over-the-top and a no-holds-barred form of humor and laughter. This Is the End brings together a star-studded cast and nobody is safe, physically and hysterically. Some material was deemed unnecessary and exaggerated in regards to physical, mental and spiritual belief, but it was well fit in this apocalyptic-picture that holds no punches. The main cast, today's comedic version of "The Rat Pack" (Franco, Rogen, Hill, Baruchel, Robinson & McBride) provided that raunchy chemistry and will keep the audiences either in disgust, in tears or in laughter. Either way they provided an emotion out of its viewers and made the film that much enjoyable. 4.5/5

  The idea of the actors playing themselves is creative and original. The movie is thoroughly entertaining and funny, but not as laugh-out-loud funny as last summer's hit comedy Ted. The cast is great and the ending was excellent as well, but I couldn't help but feeling a little let down... while original comedies are indeed rare (and I do appreciate this for being so original), it's even more rare to find a comedy that makes me consistently laugh-out-loud. Perhaps my expectations were set a bit high. This isn't to say I wouldn't recommend it, because I would, as long as you're not expecting big laughs. I'd recommend it for it's great cast, originality, and spirit.
