Anthony Dexter, Beatrice Lillie, Carol Channing

Julie Andrews is at her peak of adorability in this enjoyable (and surprisingly sarcastic) spoof of the 1920s. It has every trick: occasional silent-movie intertitles, flapper lingo ("Oh, banana oil")...( read more  read more... ), and a laughable plot about women being sold into white slavery by the scheming manageress (splendid Beatrice Lillie) of a Hotel for Ladies, aided by a cabal of wicked Chinese. (The stereotypes are bearable only if you remember this is a spoof of silent movie melodrama.) Even with able support from Mary Tyler Moore and James Fox, this is Julie's show; she plays to the camera with the collusion of director George Roy Hill, who's clearly smitten with her silly streak. The movie has an annoying tendency to spend time on musical numbers--a Jewish wedding, a vaudeville act--that don't serve the plot. A future Broadway musical would create a new score, except for the delightfully catchy title tune. --Robert Horton

If I grit my teeth during the unnecessary musical numbers, there's quite an enjoyable pastiche of silent movies and the roaring twenties in general lurking underneath. The cast cheerfully send themselves up and it's infectiously daft.

Very dated - in a bad way.

Though I love musicals, I think this would have played better without the songs. They are so undeniably pointless, the tunes are hardly memorable, and they make the movie far too long. However the cast is so quirky (CAROL CHANNING!!) and the zaniness is so endearing I couldn't...( read more) help but enjoy myself. Julie Andrews is an angel.

I love Julie Andrews and I love musicals, so this should have been obvious in it's awesomenss. But instead, I get the lamest plot ever, yes even for a musical. Millie plans to marry the boss of her next job, whoever he may be, it doesn't matter, it's part of her plan to be a kept...( read more) woman of the 20s. But then when she finally gets a job, the boss falls in love with her new neighbour? And the landlord is trying to drug the new neighbour to sell her to the slave trade? WHAT?! On top of the ridiculous story, the music itself isn't even that compelling. The opening song seems awkward even for a talented singer to perform, with way too many syllables and spoken asides, and the rest of the numbers don't get much story across, instead appearing to be set up just for the elaborate dances that lead to nothing. And what was with the random "silent movie" dialogue cards thrown in every twenty minutes? If you're going for the charm of the twenties, at least be consistent with an idea and stick to it.

Good, long, and very weird at times.

Muzzy scares me in this, she is creepy looking even though she is a great character. I wish the songs in it were the 'newer' ones however it is enjoyable none the less.
