Though this was made in the 'Disney Renaissance' era (even though this is distributed by 20th Century Fox), it falls short of other titles such as 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Aladdin'.

I guess the main problem is that the film is - yep - straight - out annoying. Despite the music ...( read more)being composed by Barry Manilow, all songs except one are boring and unoriginal. The auditory standout is 'Let Me Be Your Wings', which is truly a great love song.

The animation is a tad overdone (I mean, Thumbelina has ribbons, and Alice - Bands, and a flower necklace, and ... well, you get the point. Less might have been more), and the characters really have nothing going for them. The swallow (I've forgotten his name) is dimwitted (why not just fly her home? You're a bird.) and hyperactive, Thumbelina's prince is bland and unattractive (those pants, that haircut, etc.), while Thumbelina herself is pessimistic and whiny as soon as the slightest bit of trouble arises. All we hear from her is 'I want, I want, I wish I had wings; I wish I had a fairy prince who loved me'. But when she actually has to work to get it, she complains like all get out. Really, the only reason to support the 'good guys' is because the bad guys are toads. Filthy, slimy, clumsy beasts. But really, there should be more than that and there isn't.

Don Bluth's films have never matched up to Disney greats like Ron Clements and Tony Bancroft, but this is just plain disappointing. Could have been much better.

Ranking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth's films (Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH), Thumbelina is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale

I like that movie because it is cool at the end of the movie, that Thumbelina gets wings from kissing Cornelius on the lips. I am happy that Thumbelina and Cornelius gets married and they live happily ever after.

This is a triumph for Don Bluth! I really enjoyed it. The songs are sweet, & memorable. Jodi Benson (Ariel, The Little Mermaid) plays the title role, & she has such a great voice. I would recommend this movie to any family who is stuck in the Disney collection only rut. Give Thum...( read more)belina a chance!
