Dylan Taylor as Patrick in Tideland (2005) .... In His Own Words....

  • Caption: Dylan Taylor as Patrick in Tideland (2005) .... In His Own Words....
  • Description: On Friday Sept. 9th, Terry Gilliam's "Tideland", premiered at The Elgin Theatre during The Toronto International Film Festival.

    As if playing the role of "Patrick" in "Tideland", was not wonderful enough, I was also invited to take part in the evening's festivities surrounding the Premiere. Provided with little information I new only to be at The Elgin by 5:45pm at the latest because the film was to begin at 6pm. Not knowing what was in store for me I played it safe and arrived at 5:15pm.

    I was greeted by various line-ups stretching out like Tenticals from the Theatre and sprawling around the block. The red carpet hung like a tongue over the theatre's velvet-rope lips and on to its sidewalk chin. While busy people armed with laminent passes and walkie-talkies directed the human traffic away from and into the Elgin's mouth, I approached one of the keepers and inquired; "Where should I be? My name is Dylan Taylor, I'm in the movie". After an intitial feeling of disbelief on both his part and mine, he decided he better check. For a brief moment I hear my name echo through the surrounding walkie-talkies before my arm is taken by a frail young woman who forces me to jump tandum into the Elgins mouth. To my surprise the Theatres teeth are made of paparazzi and film fans.

    For the first time the frail woman lached to my arm speaks;
    Woman- "This is Entertainment Tonight".
    Entertainment Tonight- "Hi Dylan! Is Terry really........"
    I don't remember what I said.
    Woman-"This is E-Talk Daily".
    E-Talk- "What was Jeff Bridges....."
    I don't remember what I said.

    However I do remember signing autographs for people that somehow knew my characters name and mine.( I'd signed autographs after a kids show I did in Scarborough once, but I had to sign as "Poppa Bear".) Then my frail tandum partner parted ways with me at the elevator esophigus(spelling?) which delivered me down to the open-bar belly. In the following moments the rest of the cast and crew begin to land in the belly.

    Relieved to see that even the red carpet veterans are slightly shaken by their journey I begin to feel at home.....and so... I have a drink.

    With a healthy buzz the edge is gone. And the next thing I know I'm talking in the wings of the theatre with Jennifer Tilly about poker as we watch Terry introduce the film. He begins to call out the cast to the stage which included Jeff Bridges, Brendon Fletcher, Jodel Ferdland, Jennifer Tilly, and Dylan Taylor.
    I think I peed. Just a little bit.

    We were then escorted to our seats where I sat amongst these people that saw me as their colleague, in bliss... and in a little bit of pee, for two breath taking hours.
    The film was amazing, the cast was outstanding and the whole experience still feels like a dream.
