It's not that the performances weren't good: they were pretty good for what they were. It's not that I didn't find the NYC locations great: I did. The soundtrack was good, as well. Despite all that, it never really came together. Granted, the studio is greatly to blame for that, but that's not my problem. What I saw, butchered or not, was just the seed of some potentially good ideas that never came to fruition.
Just had the opportunity to watch this again for the first time in many years. I was pleasantly surprised at how well this film holds up. There are some really great moments and performances. Specifically Robin Johnson as Nicky. Yes, the movie does have its problems. It's little adolescent and melodramatic at times, but then again its a movie about adolescents. Anyway, at the least, this film is a great time capsule of the real Times Square before it became Disney-fied.
I f***ing love this movie, despite all its imperfections, and there are a few. Its incredible soundtrack and the amazing Robin Johnson make this very addictive and gave it its cult status. If you like cult movies, especially those with Tim Curry, you'll love this.
I had a copy on VHS back in the 80s and it was in poor condition after i watched it a million times. I couldn't get my hands on another copy till it came out on DVD in 2000.
Made me wan't to run away to the back streets of NY. Bad luck I lived in Sydney Australia. An awesome soundtrack and just a cool vibe all the way through.
