Usually the combination Grant - Hitchcock is a winner, at least for me, but I had some reserves about this movie. I wasn't won over by the story, that at times drags, the ending was rushed and unsatisfactory. Also, the acting wasn't that good, a very tanned looking Grant wasn't u...( read more)p to his usual best and charming form, and as far as G. Kelly is concerned, I was never a fan of hers. Beauty and poise doesn't equal great acting skills.
But I think "To catch a thief" could be called also "Postcards from the french riviera", for me the beautiful images were the best thing in the movie.

To Catch a Thief is a charming movie but quite different to other Hitchcock films. Other Hitchcock films made in the 50s like Vertigo, Dial M For Murder and Rear Window (Grace Kelly being in the last two) have strong story lines, brilliant camera-work and suspense. To Catch a Thi...( read more)ef's storyline almost seems a tad weak in comparison to those films, and it does not seem like a thriller, it seems like more along the lines of a romantic-comedy-crime movie. It is also slightly predictable and it wasn't too hard to guess the 'real cat burglar'. Still, it is an entertaining movie and shows Hitchcock's versatility.

a cheesy sequence with kissing and fireworks, with a meaningful story and witty lines at times makes this an enjoyable film, who is playing who you may thing as two leading stars are brought together in a hitchcock mediocre thriller which he has said not to take this film serious...( read more), well then why bother if you ask me. i never much cared for grants way of actjng however its perfect for this film.

Exciting, but slow paced. Not the same caliber as some of his other movies.

Cary Grant and Grace Kelly's chemistry is dynamic! Have on DVD. I saw it again, 4th of July Weekend 2009.

Again Hitchcock uses the young beautiful Grace Kelly. The plot doesn't work so well today -- a bit hard to swallow- but the scene where Kelly first kisses Cary Grant at her hotel room door is one of those great moments in cinema. A Must See..

Slow to start and easily predictable, but dammit if Cary Grant makes anything above average. Hitch really lays it on for the finale and by the end you don't care that you already know the thief.

Synopsis: This minor 1955 work by Alfred Hitchcock, one of the lighter entries of his creative peak in the 1950s, is still imbued with the master's stock themes of shared guilt and romantic ambivalence. It is also hardly lacking in Hitchcockian cinematic

certainly not the most invigorating Hitchcock film, but it's not without its nuances of comedy and suspense. the plot was a lot slower and less interesting than I expected, and the characters were minimally memorable at best. nonetheless, it's hard to argue with Cary Grant and ...( read more)Grace Kelly galavanting in the south of France.

Hitchcock-Lyte. Combination of Cary Grant's screwball-ish comedic style, Grace Kelly's timeless beauty, and Alfred Hitchcock's unmatched mastery of suspense. This isn't nearly as serious as Rear Window or North by Northwest but it was never intended to be. Comedi...( read more)c romantic thriller. (Comromiller? Thrillcomance? How about Romthrilledy?)

this was brilliant. simple in its beauty, sophisticated in its style. easy enough (slow) plot to follow the actors a lot more in those days and not really a mystery exept for that stirring 'Sounds Of The Times' to announce as a reminder that it actually is one ...are you followin...( read more)g hmm huh - keeping up are you, ahh the scenic locations too distracting is a good excuse.

Overall a grand production in its day i`m sure and quite paletable viewing for me ...in two halves, yes embarrisingly fell asleep not long into the second half hour. >>?Always happens to me after i watch free to air?? dunno, though i`m pouring the coffee over my job losses recently i think i`m too relaxed somtimes. need to be in the right mood.

Definitive score and tones to deffen the hardiest followers. His cameo was not so background and received an almost winking acknowledgment from Cary Grant this time.

The acting is good, but as far as Hitchcock goes, it's not the most suspenseful of his movies. There is some gorgeous scenery in this movie.

For Hitch, pretty routine, but pleasant. With an hilarious perf by Jesse Royce Landis.

Like most of Hitchcock this is a film that withstands repeated viewings. A light crime farce it is nevertheless full of great Hitchcock touches- a particular favorite of mine is the chase through the flower market with Cary Grant's comic encounter with the old flower seller
This...( read more) is priceless acting and one of the reasons Grant is considered one of the greatest actors in movie history. John Williams is also excellent as the very British insurance agent and Jesse Royce Landis (who played Grant's mother in North by Northwest ) is also on hand for a number of fine moments. Although slim in terms of drama this has to rank among the top ten of Hitch's films.

    H. H. Hughson: You are a man of obvious good taste in everything. Why did you...
John Robie: Why did I take up stealing? To live better, to own things I couldn't afford, to acquire this good taste that you now enjoy and which I should be very reluctant to give up.
    H. H. Hughson: Then you are frankly dishonest.
John Robie: I try to be.

Frances Stevens: Even in this light, I can tell where your eyes are looking.

Frances Stevens: Look, John. Hold them. Diamonds... The only thing in the world you can't resist. Then tell me you don't know what I'm talking about.

Frances Stevens: Ever had a better offer in your whole life? One with everything?
    [fireworks]
John Robie: I've never had a crazier one.
Frances Stevens: Just as long as you're satisfied!

John Robie: You know as well as I do: this necklace is imitation.
    Frances Stevens: Well, I'm not.

Frances Stevens: I'm in love with you.
John Robie: Now that's a ridiculous thing to say.

It wasn't bad but I think it's my least favorite Hitchcock film up till now. Doesn't mean you should miss it, though. You should definetly "catch" it sometime... (pun intended)

To say this is a thriller is a bit off the mark, I would rather say this is a suspense comedy, it isn´t a full blown com,edy of course but it is one of Hitchcock´s funniest he ever did and it is also one filled with alot of effortless class. Cary Grant plays a retired thief John "The Cat" Robie but is immedietely blamed when jewellery is stolen and has to catch the copycat to clear himself, cat and mouse games ensue.
