Look on top of many best movie of all time lists and you'll see the familiar titles : "Citizen Kane", "The Godfather", Casablanca", but there is also a little known movie called "Tokyo Story" that might very well lie amongst the aforementioned classics, or even ranked number one. This was enough motivation for me to check this out and to see what all the critic's raves were about. Set in then contemporary times of the 1950's, director Ozu gives us a methodical experience of the deconstruction of family and the dehumanization of the modern world. The story starts when an old Japanese couple decide to take a train to visit their children and to also see the sights and sounds of Tokyo. While greeted warmly at first, the couple soon finds themselves in the way of their business oriented children and are callously pushed away to a resort. Disappointed with their trip, they decide to head back home, but not before tragedy strikes. It's hard for me to pinpoint why this didn't hit me like it should have. It's a slow movie that apparently relies on character nuances and behavior to help culminate it's important message, so there isn't much pure entertainment value. There is normally nothing wrong with that, but in this case I think I might be apart of the wrong generation and demographic for this to emotionally touch me. I don't want to harshly criticize a supposed masterpiece, but it just isn't my cup of tea. At the same time, I do encourage others to see "Tokyo Story" because of it's important place in movie history.
Slow, subtle and painfully beautiful film about the end of the traditional Japanese family. One of those films where the more effort you put into watching it, the more statisfying an experience it ultimately is.
Ozu's comtemplative study of familial detachment is poignant and acheingly beautiful in it's simplicity and emotional resonance.
When watching this film it doesn't feel like you are watching a movie, but rather that Ozu just ripped a scene from real life and threw it onto the screen.
I recognize the brilliant presentation of this movie. What better way to present a message a message to appeal to an audience then creating such a real life presentation. There are various themes that are present in this film, and they are so subtle that a casual viewer would probably miss it.
Still, that is also the reason why this film is not for the average audience viewer. The movie does so much to make this feel like real life that it makes the movie..... well, boring.
I honestly don't even think it is for younger viewers, but rather an older generation that can relate and appreciate the story of the elderly couple as they travel to visit their children.
It's a great movie in terms of style and presentation, the message, but watching the movie to its full conclusion takes a lot of effort.
The old couple receives more hospitality and kindness from their daughter-in-law than from most of their own children. This movie is definitely overrated, or I am just not fond of slow-paced movies. It is kind of painful to watch because of the pace and inactivity, and it doesn't go straight to the point. There is nothing much going on, and this movie could have been done in less than two hours.
