Tombstone Reviews and Ratings

This is a solid western. About the life of marshall Wyatt Earp. Made and released around the same time as the movie Wyatt Earp. This one just takes a different direction with the story. The film has a great cast with Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Bill Paxton, Dana Delany, Bill Zane a...( read more)nd Sam Elliott. Not sure how historically accurate this film is. But it is entertaining. Full of gun fights and action. A fun western film. Check this movie out and also watch Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp and compare. I liked both.

Damn, this film was good. From beginning to end, it's nonstop suspense, character, and excitement. It's got some fantastic attention to detail as well as an intelligent script. Overall, it's a must-see.

Kilmer is lots of fun as Doc Holiday, but the movie is over-the-top. Just silly. I prefer Wyatt Earp.

On of the worst movies of all time, bad acting, stupid plot, not historic at all. Val Kilmer is a joke in this one.

My favorite western ever. Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday is classic!
  • September 1, 2009
The one movie where Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell shined in. I loved the confidence and the sarcasticly random remarks Val Kilmer made. The majority of what he said was quotable.

"And what a maiden pure as the driven snow, I'm sure."

So, many more. Always inebriated an...( read more)d to the point of passing out, but in step to what was around him. Like all that was for show to throw his enemies off. Russell also had that commanding fearless presence. I say one of the top westerns ever made.

    "I'm your huckleberry"

If this story appeals to you, you may find (as I did) that the movie actually titled "Wyatt Earp" is simply superior.

I see this as an underrated modern western. It's not perfect, but it's lot of fun and better than I expected. It seems like Russell wanted to make a Western that evoked the feelings of the old films, but with a modern sensibility. He just about pulls it off.

What we have is a...( read more) great cast (love the cameo by Heston!) and a good script. They take liberties with history, but for the sake of a movie, I can stand it. The movie tries to act cool like the westerns of old and, for the most part, it works. The film has swagger, no doubt about that, almost essential to a Western, but I feel that it forces some things through it's story - especially the romance between Wyatt and Josephine, and thusly Mattie's opium addiction. I know subtlety was never an adjective for Westerns, but this could've been handled with a less severe contrast (the emotional sequences between the three characters fall flat). Still, you gotta take Westerns as they are.

The performances are great, as one would expect with this cast, but Russell and Kilmer stand out. Russell gives a commanding, conflicted performance as Earp. It has a surprising amount of depth, something not normally seen from Russell (plus, he rocks the mustache!). Kilmer, on the other hand, plays Doc Holliday as the coolest man that ever walked the earth. You can tell when an actor is on their game, and Kilmer just has that extra "umph" with this character. The direction is great from the ghost that is Cosmatos (it's Russell who's directing), the cinematography accentuates the setting, and the music is finely tuned to the film.

More of a fun film than a great film. It's adequate for the most part, but has a few stand-out elements. And with that attention to detail in certain areas, it makes the film better than it should be.

What we have here is a decent modern and mainstream western. The movie is about the events around the gunfight of OK Corral and the Earp family around that time. I do not know what the real story is and I suppose the film is not one hundred percent accurate but I since I am not a...( read more)ware of what really happened I won't be commenting on that. The film plays nice with quite a few enjoyable action and romance parts in it. But that is where the movie fails. It is a little bit too happy and it doesn't have the real edge that the classic westerns had. It's missing completely that gritty element except for some moments. Other than that the movie is well acted with Kurt Russel, Sam Elliot and Val Kilmer just made for their parts delivering some great one liners from time to time. The direction is fairly good although I found some of the edits that were made to accelarate the action quite random. In conclussion a fairly good, worth a view action film.
