This is actually one of Dustin Hoffman?s greatest performances. There aren?t many actors who can really pull off drag but he certainly can and he did it brilliantly. Classic comedy!

Truly a classic, even better than over 25 years of people talking it up had promised: it's funny, it's touching, and it's socially relevant too. This is a low-investment, high-return comedy from Sydney Pollack, who's not too bad of an actor himself despite being overshadowed by (...( read more)of course) Dustin Hoffman, not to mention Bill Murray in a hilarious straight man role.

If you remember Mrs. Doubtfire, forget about it, this is the one you want to watch... although, as far as drag comedies go, I've never seen Some Like It Hot, so I may equally need to go back in time... in any case, Tootsie is a comedy for the ages, deserving of its place on the AFI lists it graces.

Tootsie represents a story of man?s vision through the eyes of a woman during the 80?s. What starts out as a way of gaining employment, soon becomes a woven web of deceipt. The film takes a playful jab at the U.S. ?Soap Opera? shows and whilst Hoffman pulls off his role as a wo...( read more)man, it?s his real character ?Michael? who is entertaining.

An enjoyable role from Jessica Lange too.

An extraordinary fresh point of view into the same old "struggling-new-yorker-actor" with a performance like I've never seen before in my life from that guy called Dustin Hoffman. Out of this world. I usually refuse to watch pre-late-80s movies for some stupid reason or another a...( read more)nd I even flagged this one as "Not interested" but I couldn't be more delighted as I was watching this from the first scene to the last one. Everything in this movie was pitch-perfect and hilarious, I kept on laughing over and over again, not only at Hoffman's mesmerizing abilities but also at Bill Murray's excellent character and Teri Garr's annoying-drama-queen extravaganza.

    Marvelous!
A truly fun experience for a life time!

HE was Dustin Hoffman and then SHE was Dustin Hoffman. Tootsie is about a man who became a woman who returned to being a man. Quite interesting isn't it?

Tootsie is a 1982 film comedy directed by Sydney Pollack. It is about a stage actor named Michael Dorsey (Hoffman) who becaus...( read more)e of him being unemployed decided to disguise as a woman to break into the television field as an actress named Dorothy Michaels. After his friend Sandy Lester (Teri Garr) asked for his advices for her audition to a soap opera, and not making into it, Michael had the idea of why not putting himself into the audition. He thought he was a good actor and he could deceive everyone by his acting. He got the role of what was supposed to be for Sandy. And he named himself Dorothy Michaels. And there the branching conflicts started. Along the way, he fell in love with his/her co-actress Julie Nichols (Jessica Lange) who thought Dorothy as lesbian.

Everybody loved Dorothy Michaels. But did she have the courage to tell the world who he really is? Did he/she have the courage to unravel his darkest secrets and tell everyone that he loves Julie? It is all a question of did he/she or did he/she not?

In many ways, I love Dustin Hoffman's acting. He is one of a kind when it comes to his crafts. He can be good, bad, pathetic, a woman, a man, he doesn't care. His acting comes naturally and not by just the cause of doing it. It is all natural. He was born to do acting, I guess.

In this movie, we saw Hoffman as a man and a woman. As a man, he was good. As a woman, he was better. Maybe those facial features make him best fit for the role. He actually has a female features that some can say easily. Adding to that is his natural gestures and voice. He can do very low tone of voice and then he can imitate an aging woman's. First time Dorothy Michaels was flashed on screen, I didn't care about her, thinking that she was just another major character played by that old woman. But learning that it was Hoffman, I was surprised asking myself, is that really him? He is a very good actor and character player. He puts himself into his roles like he owns the character. Every aspect he carefully studies and he has fine attention to details.
