Top Gun Reviews and Ratings

A classic that everyone has seen but honestly not as good as you thought it was the first time you saw it. Simply because it's action packed and with good performances from supporting actors you love it the first time but the second time you watch it you realise how dorky it actu...( read more)ally is.

Timeless movie with a great cast- Never will we forget Top Gun

What can I say about Top Gun that hasn't already been said. Great pacing, amazing soundtrack and incredible flying sequences. Someone probably said that somewhere, didn't they?
I know. The enemy planes aren't really Migs. They're just F5 Freedom Fighters. Today, we have a Mig 23...( read more) on static display at the local air museum (I live near a Canadian airbase) and I have seen a Mig 29 Fulcrum in action. We also have had Antonov and Ilyushin cargo planes flying over the house. But that is today. If I had seen those sights when Top Gun came out I would have screamed "red dawn", run for the woods and joined the Wolverines.
Still, it's about high time for a remake of this movie. One where Maverick and Goose are pitted against actual Migs instead of run-down Northrops that were already almost 30 years old when the movie came out.

  • November 4, 2009
I enjoy this film, mainly because of my love of fighter jets but every time I watch it, it feels more dated. Great Cheap Trick song on the soundtrack though

Typifies pro-military films at the end of the cold war era. A great flick, even with Tom Cruise. Damn good soundtrack too.
  • October 17, 2009
Top Gun could have easily seemed more like a silly, cheesy film if it were not for the strong cast who treated the relatively fluffy script seriously. Tom Cruise as Maverick and Val Kilmer as Iceman both turn in very good performances as does Kelly McGillis as Charlotte. Michael ...( read more)Ironside and Tom Skeritt toss in very believable performances as commanding officers which greatly add to the films overall feel of quality. Part of the success of Top Gun rests in these strong acting performances by most of the major players and this should not be overlooked.

  • October 16, 2009
I think this was a cool movie..
  • October 12, 2009
Didn't really get into it until the dramatic ending.
  • October 6, 2009
Eye candy with good action. Tony Scott always delivers on action. But this movie lacks depth. The "sequel", Days of Thunder, is the same movie.
  • October 5, 2009
If you haven't seen the movie yet, don't judge it by the ratings! It's a simple plot but there's something about it that makes it a seriously enjoyable film and one you can watch time and time again.

Great action and romance keep this from being cheesy and campy. McGillis does look a bit too old for Cruise here.

Take my breath away... Lt. Meh. For such a famous movie (that I've never seen before) I decided I had better see it and see what all the hype is about. I mean, I've been on the ride so many times at Kings Island but I've never seen the movie. Here's what I think about it:
Snooze fest! I actually had to st...( read more)op the movie and watch the rest the next day because it was putting me to sleep! First of all, he just met the girl and had sex with her and then suddenly, he's in love with her and she with him. Second of all, it was too predictable. I was sitting and watching the piano scene when I started to think to myself SPOILER ALERT: nothing is happening and it's getting boring. Something exciting and/or sad has to happen pretty soon. I don't like ANY of the characters except for Goose. I bet they kill him off in the next scene. Sure enough, they do. I was part shocked that I guessed right and part expecting something like that to happen. I wasn't cheering at the end because I didn't know why they had to kill the "bogeys" and I didn't know who they were. Maybe they were innocent men with families back home. Maybe they were just following orders and maybe they thought the Americans were a threat and if they didn't shoot them out of the sky, they'd be shot themselves. I felt bad for the "bad guys" who probably weren't bad at all. They are just normal people with wives and children back home who will be missing their husbands and fathers when they don't come back. I thought that Maverick was arrogant and conceited. I didn't like his character because he just thought that he always got what he wanted and he was the best and people just had to give it to him. It seems that MAYBE his character grew in the story but I'm guessing not that much. The only good things about this movie was sweaty muscular men playing volleyball with their shirts off and the awesome music by Kenny Loggins.

I remember getting all upset when Anthony Edwards died and then being angry with the film for making me upset unnecessarily. I also remember hating Tom Cruise. Not much has changed since 1986!
  • September 16, 2009
This is the ultimate chick flick. You think you're getting an action movie. Instead dudes play volleyball shirtless. I give it an extra 1/2 star for The Danger Zone.
