wow. wow. and wow. dicaprio was amazing even at such a young age, not everyone will appreciate this movie, mainly bcuz not everyone can identify with the torment both poets feel inside, nothing at all like brokeback mountain except for the gay theme and people should really stop comparing the two, this film is so underrated its unbelievable
I liked it- mostly because of the artsy feel it gave off. DiCaprio just blew me away and I actually didn't realize that Verlaine was played by David Thewlis until near the end of it. Wow. He did an amazing job as well.
i love it. fantastic movie and it brings tears and sadness. incredible such a love affair could happen in the 19th century. i really feel for Rimbaud. love him.
this will probably make your stomach turn, but is worth seeing.
DiCaprio is very convincing as Arthur Rimbaud, teenager, tortured, bisexual, poet,
genius..."Eternity is where the sunlight mixes with the water."
Wow what a great film this was. Before Leonardo DiCaprio became a famous actor he was known for his Character acting. In this film Leo plays an eccentric man who is all over the place and sees things for what people cannot see or take for granted. Then there is David Lewis who is mesmorized by Leo's character yet at the same time is in love with his wife. When watching this you are def drawn into both of the characters.
This misunderstood, underappreciated arthouse piece is one of the most intriguing films I've ever seen. Theatrical, vibrant, passionate and ceaselessly bold, this is a gut-wrenching character portrait and a stirring human drama. DiCaprio delivers the kind of performance one would expect from an acting veteran, and Thewlis matches him. They play such hideously selfish men that it's difficult to watch at times, but the story is so compelling that it's more than made up for. No, this isn't a marvel of technical accomplishments or an example of perfect direction, but it's thoroughly gripping and unbelievably bold. I was more than able to overlook its considerable problems.
Ridiculous. It's as if no one involved had read any of Rimbaud or Verlaine's work. None of it captures the spirit of their poetry or the spirit of France at the time. Since Rimbaud is among my favorite poets, this thing teeters on the verge of blasphemy.
such a charming and beautiful movie...the young talented DiCaprio really captured my heart totally. DiCaprio has indeed starred in a number of excellent before Titanic, and this one is my 2nd favorite after Gilbert Grape.
It's one of those movies you won't be missing out on much if you don't watch it. Leonardo DiCaprio and David Thewlis's performances were great, and that's the only reason why it was worth watching it.
Total Eclipse is an aristic mess of a film that features poorly executed ideas and careless direction in every scene. The story and screenplay are both intriguing and theatrical, and Thewlis handles his huge role quite well. DiCaprio, while ideally cast, struggles with the unsubtle dialogue and the language of a poet, and is unrealistic as an intelligent artist. The technical aspects of this film are where it really falls short. The directing is downright terrible, misplaying scenes constantly, coming up with countless terrible ideas that I'm sure she thought were strokes of genius. Her style strikes me as very pretentious, and the way she pile drives any chance this movie has at success is aggravating. The editing and photography are both sloppy, and the costumes and set design are just not on par with the best period pieces. Overall I am glad I watched this film, it's bold and tries to be original. But unfortunatelly the half-assed direction and cheap technical aspects really get in the way of an interesting piece.
i have all Rimbaud' poems. Odd seeing the guy who plays prof Lupin in HP&Prisoner of Azkaban naked. Otherwise it is a pretty good rep of both poets lives. Shows you the effects of absenthe.
Gets off to an awkward and bumpy start, but the storyline is intriguing. Dicaprio and Thewlis are great. The screenplay is occasionally weak, but the storyline and performances make up for it.
How I would have loved to have been Paul Verlaine in this film, as he has a rampant sexual relationship with Authur Rimbauld, aka the beautiful DiCaprio.
Trying to sound smart with lots of flowery dialogue, but Thewlis and DiCaprio have good chemistry. I admire that Leo had the guts to take on gay role when he was so young, especially before it was "cool."
