Touching the Void

Nicholas Aaron, Richard Hawking, Brendan Mackey, Joe Simpson, Simon Yates

Joe Simpson and Simon Yates set out to climb the west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. It was 1985 and the men were young, fit, skilled climbers. The west face, remote and treacherous, ...( read more read more... )had not been climbed before. Following a successful three-and-a-half-day ascent, disaster struck. Simpson fell a short distance and broke several bones in his leg. With no hope of rescue, the men decided to attempt descent together with Yates lowering Simpson 300 feet at a time in a slow, painful process that could have potentially been deadly for both. One further misstep led to Yates unknowingly lowering his injured partner over the lip of a crevasse. With the gradient having gone from steep to vertical, he was no longer able to hold on. Certain they were about to be pulled jointly to their deaths, the only choice was to cut the rope. How Simpson survived the fall, and made it back to base camp is a story that will astound and inspire. In Touching the Void, Yates and Simpson return to the Siula Grande for the first time to retell their story.

Very touching and frighteningly real! The documentary consists of 50% interviews and 50% reconstructions, which doesn?t make for an original doc by any means but the story itself grabs you which is more to the point.

This documentary about a failed attempt to climb down a peruvian mountain suffers from one big problem: both mountaineers tell the tale, so you know it ends well. The mix of them telling the events and impressive reinacted scenes entertains anyhow, some parts are almost unbearabl...( read more)e in their realism, when you can almost feel the cold and height. The story itself is almost unbelievable, a classic tale of mind over matter and never giving up.

The poor bastards. It just goes to show what can happen when you are young, carefree and taking huge risks.

A true life story of 2 mountaineers who went to the Peruvian Andes in South America to climb a mountain and how their expedition went horribly wrong and nearly ended in disaster for both. Amazing and gripping tale of survival.

Such an amazing story and a perfect example of heroism and hope. I can't even imagine going through what these men went through, especially what happened to Joe. It's extraordinary. The dramatisation was perfect and the acting was incredible. Very emotional story. Fantastic.

The true story of two climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, and their ambition to be the first to reach the summit of Peru's Siula Grande via the West face. During their descent from a highly successful climb, Joe sustained a serious leg injury. Following another incident, Joe w...( read more)as controversially (among the climbing fraternity) left for dead. Simon, who genuinely believed his friend was dead carried on down the mountain alone. What happened next was an astoundingly courageous display of physical and mental endurance.

Filmed in a docu-drama style with the real climbers providing their story through an interview and interspersed with impressive beautifully-filmed scenes of the events, their story is compelling from beginning to end.
