It?s safe to say I?m not exactly Steven Soderbergh?s biggest fan in the world, his films are always visually brilliant but I generally find them to be either poorly acted or to have dire script and storyline. This is one of his few exceptions. The acting, story and structure of t...( read more)his film is brilliant, and as always, it?s filmed beautifully!

Traffic is a bleak look at what goes on in the drug trade ...( read more)across the US/Mexican border. We see all aspects of how the process of drug smuggling happens from the people who get it across the border to the corrupt police and army, to the way it affects the kids on the street. This is quite a frank and somewhat depressing view of the modern day drugs trade. The direction is superb as is the acting. Every time we are over the Mexican border, the film is shot in sepia and every time we are with another set of people they have a different way the film is shot. Sometimes they cross paths. I'm not sure the Mexican part of the film was meant not to have subtitles but my DVD didn't, so I had to fathom out what was going on without knowing the language. I think I did quite well! Benicio Del Toro and Don Cheadle put on the best performances. The only thing that lets the film down is the story, although fascinating, is hardly edge of the seat stuff.

The best political thriller ever made. Traffic delves deeper into the abyss like no film has done before, bringing all sides of the argument to the table while showing just how out of control the entire world of drugs has become. The only thing that we can do is keep our loved ...( read more)ones as far away from them as possible.

Steven Soderbergh's intelligent attempt at an expose of the many links in the chain of drug culture can be seen as the Crash of narcotics. It's a worthy and well made film, but at times is very contrived; the way certain characters unknowingly pass each other in the streets is gi...( read more)mmicky at best and the fact that the US drug Czar's daughter makes the transition from preppy to crack whore overnight stretches credulity to breaking point. In fact it's Michael Douglas' section that (unsurprisingly) lets the film down, as it is 50% dry docudrama and 50% soapy melodrama. This is most definitely made up for by the sections on the streets, particularly Benicio Del Toro's Mexican State policeman and Don Cheadle's undercover narc. Soderbergh is also a little filter happy, but the direction is nowhere near as irritatingly affected as the likes of Tony Scott's efforts. The upbeat ending is also completely at odds with the message of the rest of the film, but like Crash, its faults are outweighed by its accomplishments yet by the end I couldn't help feeling I'd been lectured rather than entertained.

I was really expecting some kind of over the top, Hollywood action film and was pretty impressed to see a more serious, quite realistic type of film, with great acting. Don Cheadle is fast becoming one of my favourite actors.

Admittedly this film has it's boring parts, but ma...( read more)de quite an impact in other parts.

A great movie with a lot of clear messages and a realistic look. However, I don't feel that it is anywhere near Steven Soderberg's best work. It is surprisingly less emotional than his other work and it seems to be a little too preachy. I Think it had an amazing cast, but it was ...( read more)an incredibly jumbled script.
