Bruno Abraham-Kremor, Clément Harari, Lionel Abelanski

It is 1941, the year 5701 of creation, and Shlomo, the village idiot, breathlessly announces the news: The Nazis are coming, and all will be sent to the death camps. As the rabbi and the wise men of t...( read more  read more... )he shtetl confer on how to react, Shlomo interjects, "A fake deportation train!" The suggestion is adopted, and the preparations begin. Funds are pooled; boxcars are bought one by one, then refurbished; uniforms are made for those chosen to play Nazi soldiers; and Mordechai, the wood merchant, drills the troops that he will command. After days of frenzied work, argument, and celebration, all is ready. With Mordechai as both Moses and German commander, the train pulls out to begin its madcap race across central Europe. Filled with high suspense and narrow escapes; tense, white-knuckle confrontations; episodes of village life, political satire, surprise turns, Jewish humor, boisterous activity, and utter hilarity, this film captures the full spectrum of human character in the shtetl: the beautiful Esther; the awkward Yossi, her admirer; the frugal bookkeeper, the wise rabbi, and, above all, the crazy Shlomo, who speaks in words of prophecy and poetry. Train of Life, like director Radu Mihaileanu's earlier Betrayed (Sundance 1994), is a powerful depiction of a society gone mad and the dream of escape. A fable set inside the tragedy of the Holocaust, this moving and masterful film is both an affirmation of life and, by artful evocation, a remembrance of lives and a whole culture lost.

'God created man to his own image.. - laughs- it's nice! Shlomo the image of God, but who did write this in the Torah? The Man, not God. The Man!
He wrote it without modesty comparing himself to God.
Maybe God created him, but the Man, Son of God, created God only for inventing h...( read more)imself.
The Man wrote the Bible for fear of being forgotten, he doesn't care about God.
The matter is not "Do God Exist?" but "Do we exist?" - sometimes maybe not too *fluid* but eternal loving for yddish humor <3

It combines the humour that would come from a Wilder movie, with the funny plot of Jewishes trying to look like Nazis but asking for kosher food, and accused by their own partners of being Nazis, but after the discussion they all pray together. In this fake deportation train, eve...( read more)n comunism starts to appear, but political and sentimental questions get crossed. Very funny, funny film, with a clever sense of humour, and some unforgettable touchs of lyrism (town´s fool is magnificient). A little jewel for our eyes.

This film is really great. Rufus, who plays Mordechai, is so powerful in his role as a Jewish "being a Nazi". This picture will stay in my memory for a while. It was very touching yet full of humor.

Splendido ed esilarante, amaro e terribile. La scena più bella è l'incontro musicale degli ebrei in fuga con gli zingari in fuga... Un capolavoro nella filmografia sulla Shoa.

It s farce but touching. Besides it has my favorite composer Goran Bregovic in it:)

I've changed my rating from 4 to 5 stars after having seen it for the third time. The more I see it, the more I love it. I think it's the best film about holocaust (yes, better than La vita è bella, for example), because it's just original and a new way of making people think abo...( read more)ut those horrors. Because it's not always necessary to scare, terrify, stab hardly. It is possible to impress and move with a sweet story, with a laugh, with a more relaxed glance.
And yet: stunning photography and landscapes, witty dialogues, superbe music by Goran Bregovich (culture is worldwide).
