A brutally honest depiction of the life of a heroin addict. Full of lovable characters that everyone can relate to, they are the evil voice in the back of your head - but only nothing holds them back. Everybody has their own demons but some just can't seem to fight them off, othe...( read more)rs are far more lucky...

Not Danny Boyle's best (that'd be 28 Days Later), but it does have the most quotable opening 300 words ever. Things go downhill from there.

With the early critical praises for Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire in the waves, it is but only appropriate to re-visit his first movies. With Trainspotting, Boyle gained world fame and re-watching it still feels a breath of fresh air venturing into the world of drug addiction. The ...( read more)style still hip, the editing edgy, and the overall movie a classic. Must-see for Boyle buffs.

Whenever we meet someone new, or want to have a conversation with someone we don't know that much, we constantly rely on hobbies. People ask questions like "What do you do on your free time?" or "What is your favorite song?". But the toughest question to ask somebody is what thei...( read more)r favorite movie is. A non-regular movie-goer might not have a bad time answering. A girl might go for The Notebook or Titanic, while a male might chose Lord of the Rings, Star Wars or any action flick. I personally have trouble deciding among Clockwork Orange or Pulp Fiction, but my favorite movie of all time must be Trainspotting. Trainspotting is a Scottish movie, based on a book by the same name and starting Ewan McGregor as Renton. Although he is the movie's main focus, we meet other characters who enrich the cinematic experience. Sickboy, Spud, Swanney, Tommy, Diane, and Begby. Most of these guys with a little problem, they're heroin addicts. Some try to quit and others join in the process. The movie clearly portrays all the risks and disadvantages of being involved in this world and the negative things it eventually leads to, but, at the same time, the characters never deny the satisfaction that this vice gives to them. "Take the best orgasm you've ever had... multiply it by a thousand, and you're still nowhere near it", Renton narrates at some point in the movie. The real reason why this is my favorite movie is simply because your average friend can watch it and know for certain that he has seen an excellent movie. He will not be confused by Pulp Fiction, or distressed by A Clockwork Orange. Certainly it is a movie you should see if you still haven't. It gets you glued to your sit until the fabulous ending. The soundtrack is also a highlight, featuring songs from artists such as Blur, Brian Eno, Pulp, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and of course Underworld, with its memorable song, Born Slippy, all placed in perfect timing with the movie's screening. So next time you go to your video rental, "Choose Life", choose Trainspotting.

One of my all time favorites.

    Choose life.

Hard-hitting, yet hilarious. Ewan McGregor's finest hour and in Begbie, one of cinema's most dislikeable villains.

Mainly, this is the story of Renton, a heroin addict, and his friends Tommy, Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie. Renton tries more than once to rid himself of the white horse on his back, but finds that being sucked back in is easier than fighting the horse.

This is a movie about peo...( read more)ple and personalities, not one particular event, though several of these everyday occurrences will stand out in your mind forever - Like the world's filthiest toilet that Renton is forced to use, and his toilet daydream that follows it. There's an unforgettable scat scene with morning sheets that will be sure to turn your stomach.

Warning: There is a dead baby scene in this movie that will turn most stomachs and perhaps make you hate every heroin addict that ever lived. Though nothing is ever said about it, the insinuation is that the baby died from neglect. Before even reporting it, the mother needs a "hit" to calm her down.

Set to a great soundtrack and filled with witty dialogue (although absolutely filled with flagrant curses) and narrative, 'Trainspotting' highlights not just the differences between "Us And Them" but the differences between the addicts themselves. The most violent of the addicts, Begbie, never touches heroin and considers it to be filth while swilling alcohol and stabbing people. Spud is simply confused all the time, while Tommy manages to steer clear of the horse until his girlfriend dumps him.

If you're a fan of the addiction movie, then this is a must-see. If you can't handle horrific scenes, such as the dead baby scene, then perhaps pass on this. Because of its languid, what-happens-everyday approach is far from an active script, a rental first might be the best approach to viewing this movie before buying. Enjoy!

"Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a starter home. Choose dental insurance, leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose your future. But why would anyone want to do a thing like that?"

    Review
This film is nothing short of breath-taking, not because of beautiful scenery, choreography etc...but because it is such a powerful film in a comic and emotional sense. Rarely does a film actually change me but this did, with a perspective not only on drugs but on life in general I had not considered before. All the characters have both likeable but with flaws as with anyone you'd meet in real-life, and to look upon such a controversial subject with such conviction, imagination and a comic touch deserves real credit.

All the main acting performances are top-notch and hit the right note every time, and with a wonderful soundtrack to back the film up (Underworld - Born Slippy is the greatest track of all time) its no surprise that this gem is recognized as a classic.

As long as you're not too fragile, this is a must-see.

I don't know why I love this movie so much; it could be that it portrays a life much different than my own.
  • September 16, 2008
A hilarious movie with great actors and actresses, but Robert Carlyle really steals the show. This film is also unbelievably well done and just really creative too. Some of the stuff you see you'll wonder how it was pulled off, definitely Danny Boyle's best film.

    Good Movie Worth Watching

It's probably best not to see that when you are stoned, but this is one shockingly fantastic movie, although there are some majorly gross parts in it.
  • September 9, 2008
A disastrous mix of crass, uninspired comedy with shock and awe. This movie has its moments, some funny, some blending nicely with a solid score, but it can't mask the true intentions of the film, which is to shock the audience with a hodgepodge of despicable characters being as ...( read more)obnoxiously hatable as possible. If the characters died from overdosing halfway through the film, then it would have saved me 45 minutes, saved the innocent characters around them from further torment, and would have provided better character development that what is actually played out during the last half of this mess. "Requiem for a Dream" and "Less Than Zero" are fine examples of how to make a film about addiction with characters that you feel some emotional connection with, who want and deserve our empathy. This film, on the other hand, has few redeeming qualities.

Rented this today because I had some extra cash and I've been meaning to see it for a while now. I was kinda falling sleep at the beginning (I watched it at around 2AM) but soon after I snapped out of it, I really enjoyed it. And I admit that I've got the BIGGEST crush on Robert ...( read more)Carlyle but he was such a dick in this movie! I kinda hoped for the worst for him.

All you ever wanted to know about drug addicts... Realistic, sad but also funny and beautifully filmed. Takes some time to get used to their Scottish accent.
  • September 5, 2008
An interesting movie; less focused on a driving plot, more on lifelike progression of events. A journey through the mind and life of a drug addict, scarily realistic and innately hardcore, yet strangely satisfying.
  • September 5, 2008
fantastic and dark film, with a few laughs intact.

it's one of those films thats so controversial it couldn't help but to be loved. however it is also a very good film and a very interesting look into the psyche of a drug addict.
