    Utterly rote romantic drama which retells the medieval legend of Tristan and Iseult. The script is not compelling, the story drags, and the leads barely register any passion whatsoever. If you must see a movie about star crossed lovers, see Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet ...( read more)instead.

    War, strategy, jealousy, deceit, power, love, honor and duty.

    The story takes place after the fall of the Roman Empire. Britannia is left divided after the Romans left the lands as Ireland stands unscathed.

    The legend of Tristan and Isolde (Iseult/Yseult) is an...( read more) influential romance, retold in numerous sources with as many variations. The story has been traced by scholars as early as 1150s.

    This 2006 film adaptation of Tristan and Isolde is perfectly blended and well rounded, with a wonderful cast to boot! Watch it if you can!

    "I live in torture thinking of these moments. Every look he gives you I get sicker and sicker. There's a burning in me, I feel on fire and a guilt I can't comidify. Does it make you happy to know that?"

    Typical, standard Hollywood epic is nothing more than light enterta...( read more)inment with some romance thrown in there.

    A young orphan named Tristan (Franco) is heir to the British throne. During the period when the British were not at peace with the Irish, Tristan is wounded in battle and nursed back to health by young Irish royal Isolde (Myles). The two slowly fall in love, predictably. But their passionate romance is forbidden, and the two lovers must choose where their allegiance lies - love or honour.

    Surprisingly, there are very few good things to find here. The performances are weak, but somewhat convincing. Franco wasn't given much to work with, with such a poor script. And Myles was bordering on average and poor.

    The battles did look most impressive at times, but the American PG-13 rating means that the medieval violence looks tame and underwhelming. The film tries to pass itself off as another Braveheart, but the difference is that the extreme battle violence in Braveheart made the battles a lot more entertaining. Here I was just yawning.

    The non-sentimental approach to the characters also means that when I saw a character being killed I couldn't tell whether they were Irish or English. And what's more - I never cared when someone was killed! Each character looks similar and is not memorable in the slightest. Apart from the two protagonists, I can't think of another character that was actually developed.

    And the romance was laughable. I never cared for the romance for a single second. A love story is superfluous if the audience do not care about it. The parallels drawn between this and the story of Romeo & Juliet are uncanny. This film may be based on legend, but the studio appears to do everything they can to ensure it's a pointless rehash of the classic Shakespeare tale told in a Braveheart kind of setting. The tagline mentions Romeo & Juliet, and even the title of the film is similar to Baz Luhrman's Romeo + Juliet by inserting a '+' in the promotional title.

    Still, the film is mildly entertaining at times if a little overlong. Tristan + Isolde told its story, but not well. The tame battle scenes and laughable romance leave this sitting in the mediocre category.

    Beautiful. It has a less than appealing ending, but the story is incredible and the cinematograpy is great. Wonderful cast, too.

    Some great action but just a mildly entertaining romance with some decent support from it's stars. Not great but entirely bad

    Before Romeo and Juliet...there was Tristan and Isolde.

    Tragic medieval love story about Tristan an English knight who wins the hand of the fair Irish princess Isolde. But to the lovers dispair...not for himself but his "adoptive father" the King of England. The union is suppo...( read more)sed to bring peace between the two rivaling lands...but will their love destroy it all?

    Romeo and Juliet in Medieval times and not set in fair Verona...
    Fantastic scenery and a decent storyline. Athough it drags on at some parts...and it's not good when you want to skip some part of a film.
    This is the first movie I noticed James Franco in, and he is absolutley brilliant as Tristan.

    There are greater films like this one (Baz Luhrmann's Romeo+Juliet ets..) not great but not a diaster either. I for one enjoyed it. I did cry at times, I laughed as well. So it was worth watching. I expected it to be worse.

Over-the-top romance notwithstanding, Tristan and Isolde is a watchable hoot, with skirmishes and swordplay erupting whenever the story drags. full review

    "My face in thine eyes, thine in mine appears;
    And true plain hearts do in the faces rest.
    Where can we find two better hemispheres?
    Without sharp north, without declining west?
    Whatever dies, was not mixed equally;
    If our two loves be one, or thou and I
    Love so alike that none can slacken,
    none can die." ~ Isolde

    This movie is just too emotional for me to love it.Plus,I'm not into normal romances...Sophia Myles would be great for the part as Kate,from the Denali Clan,in the Twilight series.

    Saw this DVD over the weekend. Not bad, but I would have preferred to see Sewell as Tristan. His presence as an actor is stronger...and he is definately all man. I just think he would have been more believable as the one that Isolde could not part herself from. Now... this is not to say that Franco is not a decent actor, he just would been better elewhere in the story. The movie is alright...not brilliant, but alright.
