The 332nd Fighter Group and the 99th Fighter Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Corps were trained in Tuskagee, AL. Much to the disdain of fellow white pilots, the new recruits proved more than capable. They flew with skill and courage, eventually helping push back the Italian and German forces. Beyond their combative victories, the airmen broke down many racial barriers. Though they were often mistreated and ignored, their very existence guaranteed the eventual integration of the entire armed forces.
