Mikko (Pertti Sveholm) is a middle-aged man who runs a business he inherited from his father and he hopes he will one day pass it along to his children. Mikko and his wife, Mirjami (Milka Ahlroth), look after their 15-year-old daughter, Pihla (Emma Louhivuori), and Lumi (Silva Robbins), an eight-year-old from China the couple has adopted, while Sakari (Niko Saarela), Mikko's grown son from his first marriage, lives overseas. When Mikko is diagnosed with a severe illness that is passed along genetically, the family comes together in a show of support. But Mikko is terrified by the prospect of dying the same way as his father, and Pihla and Sakari have to wonder if they'll get it too. Meanwhile, Pihla is wrestling with her new need for independence, Sakari tries to come to terms with his bitterness toward his father, Lumi wants to know more about her true heritage, and Mirjami is hiding some serious financial problems from her husband. Vaarat Juuret (aka Twisted Roots) received its world premiere at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
